Needs vs wants

We all have our lists and think we know what we need. But do we really need it or do we just want it. I am amazed at what will satisfy you when funds are tight. Christmas can seem like you are fulfilling people's wants and that can be okay but most can survive without some of the things on our lists. Concentrate on needs first.

@rebelann You know it is sad when you retire and can't afford things. You work hard all your life to just end up being poor.

I think when people work they tend to need to replace clothes a lot, I know I used to until the last 6 years I worked, by then I didn't care if my clothes were outdated as long as they were clean and looked ok.
Now I have to go through those clothes to see what I want to keep, being retired means most of them are unnecessary and I wouldn't want to wear them anymore anyhow.
Working people tend to have a need/want kinda issue which happens because many are involved with office politics.

There can be a more pressing need to dress up at work; because whether you like it or not, you are in competition with your coworkers. Especially if you have a job that is in front of customers or high executives.
Being retired changes things a lot.

I am the type of person that does not get myself stuff very often. Usually, I really have to need it before I will spend the money on something. I rarely spend money on myself for things that I want but do not need. Therefore, on special occasions like my birthday and Christmas, I really would like to get things that I want rather than get things that I need. However, if the present fulfills both criteria, such as a pair of pajamas that I need but with cute cartoons characters on it that I really like, for example, then that would be a perfect present.

It's nice to treat yourself or be treated once in awhile.

@countryrose sadly that is what usually happens we have to find ourselves in extremely bad situations before we realize what is a need and by then most times its too late.

I think money has to get really tight before most of us make that determination of what constitutes needs.

@lokisdad I know sometimes we think we need something that we really don't need.

We need to make decisions dealing with our finances constantly. Life is all about making choices. Which pathway is the best for your life.

@countryrose Exactly!! And the point of life is that when tough times come, you should be able to own up to the decisions you made and fight !!

That's a good plan. This is normally a slow process for me.

@countryrose It might be a good plan but it is also a very slow one for me too!

@JudyEv I heard once to get rid of stuff one bag at a time. It can be less overwhelming.

I remember writing a post on similar lines where I said that when it comes to materials it should be based on our needs and when it comes to relationships it should be based on our wants.

As for relationships, we tend to look for who we want not who we need. Attraction is usually not based on needs but being needy is also not appealing. But sometimes who we want is not who is best for us and we may not be the best for them.
