Falling off and getting back up again

A lot of years ago my family were living in the country as I had a new job. We loved living there and soon became involved in the local community. My son who was 7 at the time decided he would like to learn to ride a horse. Which he did and seemed to be doing very well. One day after it had rained the horse he was on slipped and my son almost fell off. He hung on as hard as he could until he had control of the horse and became upright again. He decided that this was not for him and hung up his saddle. The trainer visited him and persuaded him to give it one more try since he had been doing so well. So my son gave it another shot. The first time he rode the horse again, the same thing happened, this time he knew exactly what to do and was able to control the horse. However, he decided that was not for him and has never wanted to ride another horse again. On the other hand I found I really enjoyed horse riding and had a few lessons of my own. I enjoyed the experience but when we came back to live in the city I never that opportunity to ride again. I'll never forget the experience of riding on the back of Oliver and neither will my son but for different reasons.

We had stock horses on the farm and I spent hours and hours riding. I can imagine people being afraid of them. It amazes me that they are so obliging when they are so big they don't really need to do anything us little humans want them to but they put up with all sorts of things.

@JudyEv That is true, they are so large and yet so gentle. Funnily enough, after all these years my son has met some who owns horses and rides. So you never know, maybe he will overcome his fear and ride again.

When I was young we lived in an area where there was a pasture with five horses in it. I used to go over and ride them bare back occasionally. The owner didn't mind since they needed to be ridden and he wasn't around. People thought I was crazy to ride these horses bare back but I never had a problem. It is the relationship you have with the animal. Maybe another horse would have changed your son's experience all round.

Maybe you are right. I think the horse was so big and he was little and unused to riding. I ended up riding the horse and loved it. We don't have the opportunity to get to know horses over here so much

@celticeagle lol. No not kangaroos. I guess I mean unless you have been in touch with horses and riding and such it just doesn't happen especially living in the city.

I think the most important thing is that you both tried and he did get back up on the horse that nearly threw him. What happens after that is not as important. It's experience under the belt.

I think it is good that both you and your son have made your decision and learnt something new. I do not know how to ride a horse, though I had ever rode when i was in China. The handler had to pull the rope to control the horse, so that the horse would not kick and throw me off.

@scheng1 It is not easy to learn to ride the horse, but when you do it is an amazing feeling just riding with this huge gentle animal

There's great joy to be had from riding - I loved it all my life, but haven't done it for about 15 years now.

I really enjoyed horse riding. It is a wonderful feeling sitting so high and looking over the hedgerows!
