Christmas Memories

When I was a youngster we had a lot of Christmas traditions. I hung out a lot with my cousins, two girls about my same age. We played at my grandmother's in the summer in our early years. But, we no longer communicate which is sad but there is reason for it. I will explain at some later time. The older of the two cousins was in the senior choir at high school and I recall one year her choir group was invited to sing at the capitol building. It was a beautiful affair. They began at the top of the winding stairs that rounded the Christmas tree and came down them to the front entry. The lighting, the marble stairs, the choir gowns and the voices all made for a very lovely program. Afterwards, the three of us drove up to the Highlands and sang Christmas carols. The Highlands is a nice housing development in the north end where we lived. We would park and walk around the area singing and adding some people along the way. People would come out of their fancy houses and bring us hot chocolate, candy canes and other goodies. It was a good time. I don't hear of any Christmas caroling around town anymore. Do you have it or participate in your area?

I don't think so. I do remember when I lived in New Jersey years ago, we had a Santa ride on a fire truck in our neighborhoods, handing out candy canes. You can't miss it with the flashing lights and sirens, when he waves to everyone.

@celticeagle Not that I recall. I believe he was a volunteer fireman. Talk about nostalgia right there.

I am NOT a singer but I miss those brave carolers. I miss the old traditions. The Wind in the Willows book has a sweet passage about Yule field mice carolers.

@celticeagle The Christmas chapter in the Wind in the Willows is charming. We read it aloud together every year.

I have not heard of any Christmas Caroling around here lately. I guess people are either too busy or too afraid to carol around town.

Do you think things in the news has something to do with it?

@celticeagle I imagine they would do. There have been several posts on a facebook group I am a part of about people going around from house to house posing as salesman to "scope" a home out for robbing later. Things like this are scary enough but adding in the tragedies that have happened the past week alone...

Our parish youth goes around singing carol. When they come to our area I join them. Four years ago I prepared a carol group myself and went about carolling. It increases your joy when you spread joy of Christmas by singing carols.
