Perfect Christmas Preparation

Run away! That's what we've done. Run away from all the Christmas preparation. We've abandoned a tree, left the neighbours to feed the cats and gone to Morocco. The sun is shining, the sky is a perfect blue and the wind is atypically low for Essaouira - the surfing capital of Morocco. It's just a short break - three nights away in a bargain five star hotel right on the beach. We're getting a daily dose of sunshine, longer days than back in the UK, and then nights that are cool enough to need a coat but still warm enough to sit outside in that coat. We arrived about 11 yesterday morning and soon found some people to share a taxi into the town. After checking in, we headed up the beach to our favourite bar/restaurant and a sunny lunch. Back to the hotel for a snooze in the late afternoon and then into the old walled town for dinner in the evening. This is not our first time in Essaouira - not even the first time this year. And it feels a lot like coming 'home'. It's not a big place, there's not a lot to do, but after an exhausting year, 'not a lot to do' is exactly what we need.

@marlina and @Jessalynnt - I'm really sorry but they'll have to wait until we get back. Can't upload from my phone on the move.

Well, I'm jealous! It's not cold here, but it's definitely damp, dirty and disagreeable! It's great to go back to somewhere you know - as long as you try other places as well, that is! We went back to Barbados in October and thoroughly enjoyed it, rain and all!

It's just about perfect - warm but not so warm that you need to keep hiding from it.

@boiboing You are right, the hotels have wonderful pools, but it's not like being by the sea.

Marrakech is fabulous but there's nothing to beat being by the sea.

I had a friend who lived there for several years. Her mom bought a beautiful leather bag and years later when I had a yard sale she sold it - to my sister and that was 30 years ago and she still has the bag from Morocco.

They have great leather goods - and wood and ironwork and all sorts. But we've been so many times that we don't buy stuff any more and we're on minimalist hand luggage.

It's just a little 'top up'. I can't take more this time of year as work is manic but I had two spare days so I grabbed them.

@boiboing Better a few than none. Personally, I ran away longer. Tell all about it later.

This sounds a perfect antidote to the madness that is the run up to Christmas. You'll be so relaxed when you get home! Lovely.
