Mozart and Meanderings

As we both love classical music, we were keen to visit the birthplace of Mozart when we were in Salzburg in July. We toured the house where he was born (Mozarts Geburtshaus) and also the house where he spent his formative years (Mozarts Wohnhaus). I love the bell system in houses whereby the servants could be summoned to wherever they were needed so of course I had to take a photo of that. The town has many attractions including a bridge littered with keys and an imposing cathedral. We went into the Salzburg Cathedral, a 17th century baroque Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to Saint Rupert and Saint Vergilius. Founded in 774, the church was rebuilt in 1181 after a fire. It was then completely rebuilt in the 17th century and contains the baptismal font where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptised. The shop windows were very attractive with nativity scenes and Christmas decorations gracing several shop windows. The street signs were intriguing too. We took a tour up the Salzach river on a boat, and walked through the market place. We found the Hotel Sacher Salzburg where the sacher torte was supposedly first created. Then it was back to our caravan park, past a pretty water pump, to watch some more hang-gliders landing, this time a couple.

Its just not classical music but I see you and your husband have a lot in common - a couple made for each other.

No music. It only gives me a certain choice of music and I don't know how to find more. This time I didn't like any of the choices. :)

Funny bell system, an ancestors of the more modern ones. I have seen the nativity scene, I have exactly the same little statues.

I loved the nativity scene. I have a tiny one that a friend brought back from Oberammergau.

@JudyEv I have a big Italian one and a small French from Provence. This year I had not time to take everything out of the boxes, but next year I want to bring back this tradition.

@LadyDuck I think it is a lovely tradition. Friends of mine would put the three wise kings some way from the stable and move them closer each day till they would finally 'arrive' on Christmas Day.

I enjoyed your lovely slideshow. How differently the Austrians mark their hero's house to compare with the UK's little blue plaques!

Yes, it's very useful having such nice big signs. Sometimes we'd go up and down trying to find a place.
