Getting Birthday Gifts - Do You Prefer Gifts or Money?

When it comes to birthday gifts I for one prefer to get actual gifts rather than just money stuffed into an envelope even if the envelope were to have lots of money inside it. I think an actual gift is a more thoughtful gift. I also love surprises. It's always fun to unwrap the boxes and see what's inside. The downside to getting actual gifts though is that sometimes I get something that I don't want, I don't use or I don't need. When that happens I wish I had gotten money instead. When it comes to getting gifts on your birthday do you prefer an actual gift or do you prefer money/gift cards instead?

Give me money any day of the week. Most gifts are trivial junk anyway. lol

To me there’s not much thought if any when you’re gifted money. Sure if you get a lot of money the person was thoughtful in away, but gifting money is the easy way out and the gift is not personal.

@porwest I always hated it when somebody gifted me perfume for my birthday. I can’t stand perfume of any kind and don’t wear it. Perhaps I should’ve told people that gifted me the perfume that I don’t use it so they won’t give it to me anymore, but I never had the heart to say it. What I ended up doing was throwing them out which I hated.

@lovebuglena Like I said, most gifts are useless junk. I have to either store it or get rid of it eventually. Money is much better. lol

I always prefer a gift. I think cash takes no thought, even a gift card is better .

I agree. Gift card is better than cash or check. While I prefer an actual gift over money or even a gift card if I get people together in a restaurant I prefer to get money because then I can use that money to pay for the restaurant. I end up celebrating my birthday out with people and end up spending much less of my own money.

It depends on the person giving the gift. It's someone who knows me well and can get me a gift I would enjoy/like - I wouldn't mind as it is more thoughtful and meaningful. However, if someone who doesn't get great gifts or maybe gifts I wouldn't like or use - I would prefer money! Usually, I am given money though because I like to save up for a quality gift.

There have been times when I've gotten perfume for my birthday. I didn't have the heart to tell the person that I don't wear perfume because didn't want to hurt that person's feelings and as a result have gotten perfume from that person on more than one occasion, which was disappointing. I'd rather have gotten money instead.

It all depends how much money. If there were to be "a lot of money" then, I would prefer that. If only a small amount is offered, then I would prefer a book.
