Tails of dinner woes

Centralia, Missouri

Three dogs. Three full bowls of food. Food in them all day (free graze, as no one over eats, and they do not feel the need to empty the bowl because the food is there). Would this solve the dinner fights? One might think so. But no. Nope, I still have to deal with growing and barking and general dumbness over the whole deal. I go in to see what it is, and it's always the oldest herding the others away from every single bowl. I can even space them out, she likes to stand over them like a mother hen over her chicks. There is enough for everyone! The pom just waits until she is done. The youngest bostie cannot wait, he doesn't even really want to eat, he just objects to the Mother Dragon hording coverage of all the bowls..... You had this problem? What do you do? Do I need to move the bowls even further apart to help discourage such silliness?

Could you put them in different rooms?

I might try moving one bowl to another room and see if that makes any difference

I don't think that will work. I've never had that problem. I had two dogs only once and then for only a month before I had to put down my Rascal. So food dish battles never took place.

The pom just waits, if only the puppy would too

@just4him her face....she was a puppy mill breeding dog, and was caged most of her life. I just couldn't kennel her. But I did put out three bowls and far enough apart she'd have to really get some exercise hording over all three, she gave up tonight, going to see if that fixes things in the long run

@Jessicalynnt Have you thought about kenneling the one while the other eats? It might teach it patience and soon you wouldn't need to kennel it.

I only had one dog and he had to deal with the cats looking at his bowl. He was told no if he went near the cats bowl. Poor dog.

My dogs go by the cats food bowl also and sometimes I catch them eating some cat food which is also dry food. @jstory07

@Susan2015 Does your Beagle even eat things she finds on the floor that are really not edible?

There is nothing you can do, one of my friend put the bowls in separate rooms, but they have to go and check what there is in the other bowl.

When I was dating my husband he had two cats. One was the mother of the other cat. The kid cat would always try to steal his momma's food. I took to standing over momma's bowl so she could eat in peace and eat her fill.

Since mine tend to overeat now I fed them in separate bowls and watch them so i would feed them in different rooms if you can since there are three of them.

@Jessicalynnt At least you could try and see if it works or not. Good Luck with that hoarder.

2 different rooms might work, just enough to keeput the oldest from hoarding

@Marcyaz she likes to stand over the bowl and eat between her legs, the dork. Today I filled three bowls and just moved them far enough apart, in the same room, that she'd get tons of exercise trying to horde all the bowls, she appeared to give up

I never could just keep a bowl of food out, Mykey and Ally would compete in a not so nice way and since Mykey was 65lbs of muscle and Ally a growin youngster now 50lbs it wasn't to my advantage to let them graze.

I actually haven't tried with Ally now that Mykey is gone, @Jessicalynnt , he would eat all the food if I'd let him. I wonder if Ally would if I let her, but then she is at a really good weight just by my giving her just over a cup of kibble twice a day. Of course she does get treats, usually a poached egg when I'm making soup for me to eat.

@rebelann I am super lucky my dogs dont just pork out until they explode. They get some treats too, just stuff that doesnt involve chicken, one has nasty allergies, so easier that way

Sounds like a little bully over the food lol. I guess that's just what dogs do. They are territorial about their space and the other' space also.

Having several dogs at the moment, this is an issue we have not solved-so no free grazing here. Although some suggest certain things will work, we have not found a method that is good for us.

I can never keep food in my dogs bowls because my male dog will over eat and get sick, it never fails! I have 2 dogs if they eat inside my male dog bullies the female. However, if they eat outside my female bullies my male. I usually just put there bowls in separate rooms and I yell at my male dog when he tried taking my baby girls food.

One of my dogs is really so greedy. He will eat faster than the other and then he will try to grab his food but the other will of course not allow him and they will rumble. In this case, I will use a long rod to castigate the greedy dog and he will then retreat.

that's a shame... You may have to put the dominant one in another room, still feed them at the same time... but the dominant one in a seperate room... and see how that works .... the other solution is more time consuming for you and that would be to stand between her and the other dog bowls and tell her no.... there are lots of dog trainers on youtube, with dog training videos specific to many different problems... you might find something on there.....

@Jessicalynnt if they don't eat at meal time, pick up the food until the next meal time. Mother hen could be crated while the others eat.
