When ugly is beautiful! (Do you meditate in unusual ways?)

These New large Advents Loudspeakers (circa 1975) were brought to me yesterday for restoration. My job is to make each wood surface look as beautiful as I can. Working on vintage loudspeakers is one of my "little joys." Once the planning is done, sanding each surface is like meditation to me. I've turned these so you can see the bottoms. Those are the two most scratched up surfaces. Of course I'll post an after picture when these are done. Do you also mediate in unusual ways?

I stop and just look hen I'm hiking. It's meditative. Painting probably feels more like my speaker restoration.

I like to restore wood and the more scratched it is, the more I take pleasure in cleaning and polishing to give it a new life.

That means you can relate to how delighted I was when I saw how scratched up the Advent bottoms were. I'm going to start on the tops soon.

@LadyDuck I would love to have a true wood restoration studio, with several peoiple working and sharing ideas. Of course, with some antique furniture and such (guitars too), you DON'T want to restore it, as it can lower the value. That would be a whole new area of research for me.

I suspect that there are two scratched sides and two that are still in pristine condition, so you will simply turn it around and claim to have restored it.

@jstory07 Of course I am. The elves and I have been preparing for this since January, so we are always organised early. Now all I need to do is fit a couple of fresh batteries to Rudolph's nose. Of course he may not even need them this year because I understand that it be a full moon.

That's what I'll tell the owner. Just show those good sides. That'll be $80, please.

Oddly enough some of our menial tasks in Seminary were designed to be meditative, and a lot of monks in the order which I am associated with still do them. The idea is ongoing Contemplation, even (or especially) in the mundane world and one's daily events.

Monks and their chores (and being "present" no matter what you're doing) are mentioned in a chapter on "Little Joys" that we read in my psychology class.

Well yes. But MyLotting involves some thought. It's not quite meditative to me, though it is pretty relaxing.

When I need to relax and calm myself down I read. Nothing is more calming for me than a good book. I don't think I could ever meditate in the usual way my feet would probably go to sleep lol.

Yeah, my feet would go to sleep too. Right now I'm sanding these new speakers and watching football on TV. A totally lazy day.

If useful is when I am getting very stressed then yes, I do. I find meditation is very soothing and helps to eliminate some of the over whelming stress and anxiety that I feel. I have had to take so much out of my life so I don't feel that.

@TheHorse ...Sure it does. Just try to meet it head on and don't let it get the better of you.

I'll post a picture when they're done. I just did a post with those ugly tops sanded. I'm not quite ready to oil them, though.

It's so satisfying.... when you can restore things like that... and I can see that it would be like meditating while working...., I find that when walking, or using my camera, or when I am making jewelry.... it soothes the soul .....
