I just heard on the evening news where a elderly couple died from carbon monoxide fumes and a family had a fire at their home and fire investigators were concentrating their investigation on the fire place. I think we all need to check our carbon monoxide detectors for low batteries and check the creosote in fireplaces. Please be aware that these two things can cause deaths this time of year.

I just bought a 10 year batter carbon monoxide detector, so I don't have to change batteries for 10 years.

We do not use our fireplace because it needs a good cleaning. As is it is too warm for a fire. It is the little things we don't think of that come up and surprise us. Not always in a good way. I am sorry to hear of the passing of these people.

A wood burning fireplace should be cleaned every year. We had two homes with wood burning and two with propane, I'll take propane any day. This house has a super duper carbon monoxide monitoring system and it the siren goes off you'll hear it at your house!

Yes, but if it is used a lot it should checked occasionally when in use.

@celticeagle We don't use the fireplace, I don't like them at all - wood or propane.

Yes always careful. We check ours quite often but we do not have a fireplace but we do use fuel for heat so we have to check often

Good to be aware of these things and check things like the heat filters and such.

fireplaces need maintenance too! When we were house shopping the realtor thought I was nuts, but I insisted on seeing the maintenance records for chimney cleanings, and if there wasn't one, would insist on it being done before we'd even consider bidding on a home
