Hoping for good news at my hospital appointment tomorrow

For the past 3 months I have been passed from hospital to hospital in my attempt to arrange a cataract operation. This has been a combination of examinations and intermediate preparatory treatment. This has made it impractical to book a holiday since I always had either a forthcoming appointment or was waiting to be given one. Tomorrow I will return to Withington Hospital to undergo the assessment that I was due to take early October. I am seriously hoping that I will be given an approximate guide as to how long it may be, which will then free me to take a holiday. It has been so long since I saw an airport that I am struggling to remember what they look like. With a bit of luck I may be holiday hunting by the end of tomorrow.

@arthurchappell It is infuriating. I have no problem with the concept of having to wait, but for 3 months I have been constantly waiting for letters followed by appointments.

All I want is a definite time instead of constantly waiting for letters and appointments.

This is something that I find quite odd that it has taken you so many months for this and the date for the operation is still not fixed. *I thought you too use a mouse just like any of us

This is because I have been transferred to other hospitals for interim treatment prior to the operation, As a result I have had 5 appointments since I originally attended for the assessment that I shall have tomorrow, having to wait for an appointment in each case.

Cataract operation gets completed in just a day! Dad got both his eyes operated. He is doing good. So why are they sending you from one hospital to another? *puzzled*

I initially went for the assessment, but they discovered a tear in my retina. This caused them to refer me elsewhere, where I was examined first and then had the cataract repaired, followed by another examination to ensure that the repair was satisfactory. Now I am going back for the original assessment.

It will be good to know where you are regarding the operation - I really hope that you will be on your way to sunnier climes soon.

This is what makes it so annoying. I have been looking forward to taking a holiday for months, but have been constantly waiting unknown periods of time for each appointment. If they asked me to return and gave me a specific date then I would know when I was free to travel. Instead they tell me to wait for a letter, which may come in a few days or several weeks.

@Asylum How strange that is as a cataract operation is just go in and go back home at least that is how it was with me. I saw my eye doctor and he scheduled me an appointment with a Specialist, I saw him and we set up a day for the operation. End of story.

I had cataract surgery on one eye and the other is waiting for a date with the knife/laser. Now it is day surgery and recovery is fast to impede holiday plans once the day is fixed - siva

I will have both eyes done, but will expext them to be within a few weeks of each other. Once one eye is done I shall need new glasses, so I will not be happy with a long wait before I can acquire some.

@Shiva49 That would be a major issue to me because I actually need glasses. With only one eye corrected I would be unable to order any, but still unable to see clearly with the remaining eye.

I thought tomorrow's is the operation date. It can be quite troublesome to keep waiting. Hope you'll get the good news tomorrow since you have to spend hours for traveling. Good luck & take care too!

That sounds more horrendous than my situation. The idea of spending money to go so far into the procedure and then having to abandon it is outrageous.

There is no doubt that I will be declared in need of the operation. It does not really matter if the operation is soon or a long way off, as long as they finally give me a specific time. I am fed up of being told to go home and wait for a letter.

Delays like that are SO frustrating. My step-father has been waiting months on a hernia op and has no idea whether they'll sort him out so that he can have a holiday in the summer.

More annoying than the delays is the fact that they never give me an appointment time until later, so I am never certain when I would be free to travel.

@fishtiger58 I have no problem with the delays. My complaint is that I have to wait an unknown period of time for an appointment, only to be given another and have to wait again to find out when. This means that I cannot chance taking a holiday in case I receive an appointment while away, so I end up constantly waiting and tied to my home.

@Asylum So you have that national insurance I'm betting much like Canada does. I have heard while it's good that everyone has the same insurance, the waiting lists for surgeries and such can be very very long.

@garymarsh6 It is more likely to flood at Spanish airports because according to Henry Higgins the rains in Spain fall mainly on the planes.

@saurabhrmp A cataract is a coating on the eyes of the eye which stops light passing through properly, so the lens needs to be removed and an artificial one fitted.
