A 1972 feature film that was Sean Connery’s most un-James Bond-like role of all.
He plays a police detective who murders a suspected child molester, played by Ian Bannen, during a gruelling interrogation at the police station.
The story is told in flashbacks, as the police investigating Connery’s offence, try to ascertain what happened.
Initially, it seems fairly obvious. A good cop and father becomes totally disgusted by the child sex attacker sitting before and him loses self-control, and becomes violent. Ah, but it runs rather deeper than that.
Bannen manages to demonstrate to Connery's character that he has it in himself to be a pedophile too, and it is this shock to his mind that leads Connery to a terrible act of career and freedom wrecking retribution.
The acting is fantastic, with an understated supporting role provided by Trevor Howard. An unforgettable, if harrowing movie.

This was an usual choice for Connery but he probably wanted to work again with Sidney Lumet who previously directed him in The Hill.

@arthurchappell Yes, The Hill was a fine film. Harry Andrews was terrific as the drill sergeant.

Connery has played some very good roles in his career. I don't recall this one and will have to check and see it at some point.
