Happy New Year to all my myLot friends. What are you going to be doing tonight? When we were younger we were out partying with all our friends, now we are lucky if we stay awake until the New Year shows up. We were invited to a couple of parties but to tell you the truth we'd rather stay at home. We would be on the highway to get there and get home. Too many drink and drive to make it safe to go out on this particular night. We will have the TV on and at least I will make it to midnight and watch the ball fall. In Canada if you have a party at your home and someone drives drunk leaving your home you, the home owner is responsible. I don't know if that is what happens where you live but it's worth thinking about. I wish for all of us a Happy, Healthy and Fun and Sober New Year.
The law is clear when it comes to work shindigs, less so for home socials

We used to celebrate out by going to a dinner dance, and then in later years, house parties. I thought it the most fun when our son was growing up and aware of what new years entailed, we'd go out for Chinese with some friends, and their children, and then we'd all go over to the bowling alley and bowl for a while. Those were fun years. This year, we'll go out for a nice dinner together and then back home and probably in bed sound asleep before the clock strikes midnight. Happy New Year!

We used to do all those things but where I live you need reservations on the restaurants and we just don't do that so we are staying home this year. We are also saving our cash for a warm and sand beach...

That seems a harsh law to be held responsible for your guests. In my eyes people should be responsible for themselves, drunk or sober. A happy new year to you Marilyn - we will be doing the same as you - sitting in front of the TV.

With age comes wisdom. Canada tried this to get homeowners to put down their feet about letting the drunk drive. I actually like the law, (if it is a law) because restaurants and bars can't let drunks drive home either...they still do but a lot less than before..

@PainsOnSlate I once inisted on driving my former Brother in Law home. I lied and said I would drive him to his truck which he had left at the bar. When I slowed down to head out of town, he jumped out of the van. I gave up at that point and went home. He went and got his truck and drove home. I suppose I should have called the police. Any way, a home owner can't always stop the drunk.

@paigea That is true. If they insist on leaving and driving drunk there is little you can do except to call the law and let them know.

I've never liked going to parties on holiday nights, there's always those one or two fools nobody notices leaving drunk. It's the same here but only if they catch a drunk driver and can figure out where he/she was before getting drunk, the bars around here keep a list of taxi #'s for those who are too drunk to drive and usually its a free ride for them. I will however be taking part in toasting in the New Year .... if I don't fall asleep in front of the PC again. HAPPY NEW YEAR

We have the same law in Switzerland, but we also have an association called "Red Nose", you call if someone had drinks and they send a "driver" to bring you home with your car.

@PainsOnSlate Teens are not allowed to do this, the volunteers must be at least 25 years old, it's for security reasons and also because they need a special insurance in case of accidents.

We have teens who work together to do that here too. Very enterprising teens...

Red Nose is all over Canada too. For some reason I couldn't open their web site to find out how old they are but it makes sense that 25 would be a better age.

That's a very interesting drink-drive policy. I'm not entirely sure it's fair though as it's not so easy to control your guests.

@PainsOnSlate You'd definitely need wipe clean seats in your car - just in case

But it certainly makes the home owner think twice about having a party at home. There are young people in our area who do nothing but drive drunks home after a party and make a ton of money doing it.

@PaintsOnSlate , we are 24 townhouses in the gated community I live in, and we held a big barbecue, and just walked to our homes after the countdown. I wish you a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous 2016! :-)

Happy New Year! We stayed home and went to bed at a fairly normal time. We did let the kids stay up until we went to bed, which was pretty late for the youngest. She looked like she was about to fall asleep when we decided to go to bed. Hubby had to work at 6:30 this morning, so that limited how late we wanted to stay up.

I wouldn't go to a party where is drinking is to begin with, and plan to stay in tonight as I don't like being out with all the drunks that will be on the road.

I have always spent New Year's at home. I have never thought of it as a genuine holiday, and there are too many drunks out there on the roads, etc. I usually don't even stay up.

I like to stay up but I don't like the odds of running into a drunk on that night so it will be watching TV hopefully until the ball falls.
