Supper was ham hash and a fried egg. Dessert: cake with frosting. I looked on line about whether I could just bake the hash stuff instead of frying it. All I could find was recipes that involved hash brown potatoes, I got out one of our aged hand meat grinders earlier today. Mom seemed to have fun watching me puzzle out how the grinder pieces fit together. Then we worked out how to attach the grinder to the table with the least amount of damage being done to the wooden table- not an easy task. I put chunks of raw potato onion, carrot, broccoli, ham in and finally a piece of bread to clean out the grinder's maw. Just like Grandma would have done in her day. It felt good, clenching the wooden handle, hearing the raw material get caught in the auger, watching the stuff grind out. Mom: move the pan! Too much there now. We participated as a team, involved in forming our upcoming meal.

@paigea I don't think many people make hash now. Weirder than making a pot pie, I guess.

@softbabe44 This sounds tasty. This confuses me. What is ground up? The meats are put into the dough then boiled?

I remember mom using two rubber squares on both sides of the clinching part ... don't know what the heck the name of that contraption is ... to help protect her wood table. Wow, that was many years ago.

I think mom's came with those rubber squares so it wouldn't slip off the edge @sallypup boy, I wish I knew where she put it.

@rebelann There's some super nice old grinders out there. I love simple machines like these oldsters.

@rebelann The rubber squares is a good idea. I had a hard time getting the grinder to clench onto the table and stay clamped without harming the table.

@thehorse I have no idea how old the grinder is. I also have one that lives in a hand made little wooden box. I almost like its box more than the grinder.
