It's beginning to look a lot like Tax Time here in the US...

....yes it is. I already received two documents that say 'keep for your tax records' so the party has begun!
I keep a spreadsheet of tax related items and I keep it up-to-date through the year. That way when tax time rolls around I don't have to scramble for information, it's all right there.
Even though we don't have a mortgage or enough medical to claim deductions , I still keep all my medical records anyway. I've been doing it for 18 years (since we got married) and I'll continue - you never know when things might change.
We do have our taxes done professionally since I prefer it that way. I could do the taxes, I did for many years before i got married. We use our local Farm Bureau Tax Lady and it's not expensive.
One thing that I would like to point out is if you have enough income to file taxes you need to include any money you earn online as income. It's up to you to keep track of what you earn on sites such as this one and Swagbucks, CrowdTap, etc. They don't send forms. This is another item I keep track of on a spreadsheet. Even if you only earn a $5 Amazon gift card that is considered income when it comes to Uncle Sam.
I don't believe in cheating in any shape or form and that includes on Income Taxes. I always declare every penny.

@AbbyGreenhill It's the HR Department who does our payroll , who automatically deduct the corresponding income taxes . At the end of the year , they will recompute according to your actual earnings and give back to the employee or deduct what is the actual excess or addition to their deducted taxes.

Really, is that a benefit that is part of our job?

@SIMPLYD I am not talking about that - I am talking about income tax that we prepare for the IRS.

@Jessicalynnt I figure the cost of the paper and toner alone is a savings to me.

I haven't even thought about tax time yet. I also have my taxes done and it's worth paying and not having a headache of doing it myself.

I agree because if I make an error I am responsible, if the tax lady makes an error - well it's up to her to fix!

@AbbyGreenhill I pay the bills and keep up with the checkbook, but my husband does the taxes. I guess you would say we help each other out with the financial stuff.

The way it works here is if you basically have no income (except for Social Security and a small pension - we pay very little taxes, the last two years when its all said and done we get back a few bucks. the only way we could use deductions would be if we had a huge medical emergency and spent thousands and thousands of dollars. Our medical insurance is zero premium.

@AbbyGreenhill We have to declare all the earnings, included Pensions and then we deduct the medical insurance and the expenses for the house maintenance. If the resulting amount is under the minimum to pay taxes, we owe nothing.

@LadyDuck its the same here, we declaer all income, but we pay very little withholding taxes on the pension so it doesn't amount to much, If you don't pay in taxes you don't get money back.

I usually wait until the end of February that gives all our documents time to get to us. I filed to earlier one year and got a form after ward. Lesson learned. I do my own, I refuse to pay somebody since ours are so easy to do. The year the twins were born and they year Tiny (the unhealthy twin) had open heart surgery we were able to take the medical expenses deduction. Unfortunately it did not help tons since we had paid out so much. It did teach me to save every medical receipt also, because you are right, you never know what will happen and what you will need to save.

It is that time of year. In Canada we will start receiving forms later this month. Personally I will only have one form, and I know how much that will be.

I am somehow dreading this year's tax season. I will be filing single this time, and I do not know if I will end up having special tax cases. I started to take tax preparation courses last year, but I end up dropping the course because it conflicted with my new work schedule.

I am not up on any of the tax stuff, so not sure if singles pay a higher rate than married, but I think so.
