One horse open sleigh? No, I’ll take my car!

Days like the one we had recently, with snow on the ground and the thermometer outside showing a balmy 16 degrees, make me think of how blessed I am to have a car. We’ve probably all sung “Jingle Bells,” with its refrain about a “one horse open sleigh.” But have you ever thought about what it would be like to travel for any substantial distance in an open vehicle with the temperature hovering in the teens or lower? And just let there be even a little bit of a breeze… Today I had to make a round trip of about 16 or 18 miles. Was I concerned about the cold? Not at all! I just jumped into my fully enclosed automobile, turned up the heater, and off I went. In fact, after ten or fifteen minutes of driving, I actually had to turn the heater down a few notches. So, that one horse open sleigh thing might be picturesque in a song, but in the real world, give me my car every time!

I live where we get very cold winters (usually) People can spend most of the winter with a light jacket as we go from our well heated homes to our well heated cars, My husband does remember taking a sleigh in the winter.

I usually wear just my light jacket throughout the winter precisely because I expect to only go from one heated environment to another.

Our ancestors did not have an easy life, that's for sure.

They'd probably say we have it too easy!

I hear you. So long as the roads are clear and the car is sound, its easy to forget how easy it is to get around. I continue to pile on coat and hat and gloves cause if the car has an issue, the side of the road will be a horror and worse if I dress like its 85 out.

I'm with you on being prepared for what happens if you have car trouble on a cold day. That's why I make it a point to keep extra warm jackets in the car for just such a contingency.

You don't mention the trials of the poor old horse! Seriously, in summer, we're very appreciative of the air-conditioning in the car too.

You are so right. I can remember riding in a sleigh when I was a youngster, but I am glad for my car and for a heated garage.

Kids can have fun in just about any circumstance. But we adults just can't take it any more.
