The Affluenza Mom Complained About Jail Conditions

Have you been following the case of the teenager from Texas, known as the Affluenza Teen, who drove drunk, killed four people and seriously injured two others? He got off with probation because his lawyer convinced a jury that his affluent parents had not taught him right from wrong. He never had any consequences for his actions, no matter what he did.
Then, when he broke his probation by appearing to get drunk again at a party, his mother took him to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to prevent him from serving just FOUR MONTHS in a juvenile detention center.
Now, they have both been caught and the son in being held in a Mexican detention center. He will probably be there for several months. The mom has been put in jail in Houston.
This morning, at a hearing in Houston, the sheriff said that the mom complained to him about her accommodations in the jail.
He told reporters that he told her she was in jail, not in a resort!
I guess the Affluenza Teen has an Affluenza mom who thinks she should not have to suffer any consequences of her behavior, either.

What?? He got off because he didn't know right from wrong? That is absolutely ridiculous - whether he did or not doesn't alter the fact that he killed 4 people, and should have received a severe sentence.
As for his mother - let her rot in jail.

You are sooo right! The U.S. government has been slow to extradite him from Mexico. I think that someone up there figures that a few months in a Mexican detention center might do him some good ... not that anyone thinks it will change him, unfortunately.

@Elizaby - I agree that will will probably end up wishing he had served his time in juvenile detention and, I hope, his mother may soon wish she had let him. If she had, she would not be in jail right now.

@DeborahDiane If she can get out of jail, this is not justice. I would like to see if a poor woman (no matter the color of the skin) would come out or if she would get the maximum of 10 years.

Yes, the mother is even worse than her son. She is old enough to know better, but she continues to behave the same way. She could get 2 to 10 years in jail if she is convicted of helping him flee. However, lawyers on TV say it isn't an open and shut case. Hard to believe, but she could get off.

@LadyDuck - You are so right that this story would have been entirely different if the woman (and her son) had been poor.

I agree! I can't believe they were in such a hurry to get her back to the U.S. I'm sure the prisons in Mexico are even less comfortable than the ones here ... at least after I saw the prison where they kept "El Chapo."

I'm glad they are both in jail, too. What that mom has encouraged is almost beyond belief!

@just4him - I agree that his mother has not done him any favors. Unless he makes a radical change in his life, he could end up spending a lot more of his life in jail.

@DeborahDiane I feel there isn't any hope for people this arrogant. It would take a life-changing experience to teach him any other way to act.

Such an impertinent woman to complain like that . They both deserve to be in jail.
I thought you got much stricter law than here .
Though here the rich prisoners were discovered to have affluent accommodations in prison . So , those prisons were relocated and now languishing in a true jail without nice accommodations whatsoever .

I agree that both the affluenza mother and her son deserve to be in jail. It is interesting. I wrote this article a couple of months ago (I just noticed your comment.) They have been very low-key and out of the news since all this happened!

It amazes me the values that some people have ... or the lack of values, I should say.

@DeborahDiane , I think that him ending up in a Mexican detention center is going to teach him right from wrong very quickly, he is going to wonder why he did not just take those 4 months back home, and it is shocking that he caused people to lose their lives and only got 4 months in the first place. His Mom sounds awful, spoilt and clueless, a pity that money will probably get her off scot free.

Yes, it is a pity that money will probably get her off scott free. I imagine that the son will probably end up back in jail for some other crime, the way he is going. I hope they both change their ways, but I have observed that many people change very little ... until they simply self-destruct.

Wow! There really is an entitlement mentality, even among people in prison. I have actually visited a prison in Mexico, as well as toured a U.S. jail. I can understand why the affluenza teen eventually asked to come back to the U.S. While most of our jails and prisons and over-crowded, our prisons are luxurious in comparison to the un-airconditioned, crude conditions that exist in many Mexican prisons.

I agree! The reality that this mother and son are going to experience is going to be pretty awful, I think. Even if the son gets off with a short time in juvenile detention for this crime, the way he is headed makes me think that he will spend a lot more time in jail in the future.

@ElizabethWallace - I agree. Mandatory psychiatric care would be an excellent idea for both of them ... permanently. They are both a danger to themselves and others.

which reminds me of a famous woman who is imprisoned here in my country... she is receiving VIP treatment; her cell is airconed, with gas range, and everything a rich person may have.

Oh, that is awful ... but something I am afraid could happen in nearly every country. Some of our "white collar" criminals in the U.S. have been sent to prisons that are sometimes referred to as "country clubs." Outrageous.

I agree! It just baffles me that this could have happened in such a "law and order" state like Texas. I would have been surprised for it to happen here in a liberal state like California ... let alone the state that executes more people than all the states put together. What was this jury thinking??

The mom did her son no service taking him to Mexico where he will remain in jail while fighting extradiction which could very well be more than the four months he would have served in Juvinile detention which is far worse, Jail is jail and there are (or should) be no special favors just because one is rich

I agree that it is very sad. I can't believe a jury ever fell for it. I'm glad in a way that this case turned out the way it did. Surely no other jury will be so gullible in the future. At least I hope not!
