A trip to the emergency vet is how we started our day

Yesterday evening while I rested my body and my sciatica, poor Ruby was having dry heaves. That is very unusual for her. She did it several times and then seemed fine. This morning around 3:30 or so she woke me up with that dry heave noise. Then she went into the living room and did it continuously for a few minutes. I got her outside, I didn't know what else to do. She would be fine for a while and then it would start up again. I gave her one of the stomach pills the vet had prescribed when she had severe vomiting two months ago. It seems to calm her for a little while. Long story short, by the time my husband was up and moving around she was worse. She was still having dry heaves as we got her in the car for the ride to the emergency vet, which is a good 40 minutes away. Once at the vet she seemed back to normal, she greeted everyone, gave kisses and wasn't happy at all when the vet examined her tummy. They took stomach x-rays and blood work. They had to rule out pancreas problems (which labs are prone to) and bloat. Her blood work was perfectly normal, and her stomach is not only in the right spot, its not enlarged at all. The x-ray did indicate gas in her system which is normal. However, if the gas doesn't leave her body then it could be a problem. They gave her a double shot of something to calm her tummy down. She can't have water until around 1 pm and only a small amount. No food at all until around 6 pm and then just a small amount. No treats at all. I have to call the vet later and let her know Ruby's condition. If she is still dry heaving then we would have to take her back. If she is acting 'normal' then no need to go back. They are forwarding the reports to her regular vet and I have the x-ray just in case. Right now she is sound asleep a few feet from me. I wish I was asleep too, I might go sit in my recliner and hopefully close my eyes, it's been a long morning. Photo is mine.

I saw a show the other day and the vet said, it's hard to be a vet than a people doctor because pets can't tell you where it hurts.
