The lady who wanted to fool me…

Before I go to bed, I would like to share you something that I experienced when I had my duty at the Obstetrics-Gynecology ward with level 2 nursing learners this morning. I always uphold the policies of the school; I come on time and my students should never be late (punctuality is a virtue, I always tell them this!), I have my complete paraphernalia (my pencil case hanging on my neck has the 3 ball pens (red, blue, and black), a pencil, a pair of bandage scissors, and a penlight. I have my notebook, ruler, stethoscope, and other items in my big bag. I wear my complete uniform with a watch with a second-hand, wear pink lipstick, and tie my hair up in a bun. I therefore expect my students to do the same thing; I check their paraphernalia before they have their duty (1 missing item- deduction of 1 from the ceiling grade of 85). There was a female patient whose intravenous fluid was infiltrated. I checked the patient’s chart and when I noted that the IVF should be terminated, I asked the student assigned to remove the IVF, under my supervision. “Check the time you remove the IV fluid; that should appear on your sample (nurse’s) charting!” Alas! When I checked the student’s watch, it was 3:45. Our duty is 7AM-3PM, and it was only 10:20AM when she removed the IVF. I asked her if her watch’s battery is drained. She sheepishly replied, “Ma’am, it is just my props. The watch is not functioning; the battery is dead”. I told her to buy a new watch for tomorrow, or else, I will give her a failing grade on ‘personal and professional development’ level of competency. Sometimes, people try to con others. I try not to be deceived. How about you, have you been tricked my others?

Do you believe she wanted to fool you? It's not possible that her watch stopped functioning after she left home?

Seems like something so simple to fix, I wonder why she would not just go take care of it. Seems silly to risk a bad grade for. Hope she shows up with a new watch.

i checked her wrist watch this morning; it was moving now. She borrowed the watch of her father. Yes, that was exactly what she told me in our Iloco dialect, "Wen, Ma'am, props laeng daytoy".

And this student wants to go abroad one day? is she serious?!! there's just too many nurses and very few who are really gifted for the profession. most of those people are in it. what she did was no excuse, maybe she was scared and all but she works on a field with has something to do with the life of the patient. she did wrong!

@ridingbet you know i remember one time a nursing student said something about serving clients not patients answer when interviewed and asked why he wants to be in nursing. for me, that's a total bull.

the students almost always ask from the previous group if the clinical instructor is strict and stingy. I was also always thought of to be the strict "old instructor" only to find out I am a lenient teacher. I hope she will be able to accept her fault and do the right and proper way to attend to patients under her care

@Letranknight2015 the word patient is somewhat depressing and degrading. CLIENT is the latest word we use to call the sick people who need care and attention. if you also read closely on some of my posts here, and even on Bubblews, I call the patients as CLIENTS. but if you call it bull, then I have nothing more to say to you, but I hope you don't generalize all nurses, because they may just be a handful of the millions taking care of the sick. I call my patients as clients.

Watch as props? Whoa! I remember someone who wears her watch even if it was not working because she said she felt incomplete without it. Hmmmm But I know if you are a nursing student, especially when on duty, you really need a watch that is working and has to be with a second hand, I remember that. Tricked by others? I think many times before. I used to trust others easily.

you are a very trusting lady hija. so how about becoming a lady who should check the personality of somebody before you put all your trust in this person.

You're a strict teacher! Very disciplinarian! That's good! So you're a nurse by profession or a teacher?

I am a nurse by profession. I was the head nurse of a secondary hospital for 8 years, and I shifted to the academe in 2004. I handle nursing students in OB and medical areas.

well, they should not do that especially if they know that I am their CI, because I always follow the school's policy. it is for their own good, not mine.

At least she owned up when you asked her. So many young people are not in the habit of wearing watches, but she should have made sure that she had a functioning one if that is the requirement.

Hehehehe! You cannot be fooled, kabsat. But if we may have met earlier (in our teens), I may have fooled you without noticing it. No, no, not what is in your mind! I may have borrowed money from you and forgot about it . . . . .

If her watch is not working why should she wear it? I think in nursing profession watch is important to many things.

they think that we are not conscious and aware of what they are expected to have, that is why they think we will let their inconsistencies be missed by us.
