How I almost gave away $300 this weekend by being careless

Several years ago, a friend, who knows I'm an audio geek, gave me an original Acoustic Research AR-XA turntable. To most of you, that doesn't mean anything, but it's a really good turntable that came out in 1969 or so. At that time, it cost something like $87. My friend, a retired veterinarian and current music buddy, said he'd had it in his closet for decades, and had no idea whether it still worked.
Last week, I almost offered it to a Vietnamese fella who buys vintage American stereo gear here and sends it to Vietnam, where it can be fixed for a song and then sold for good money to Asian audiophiles. I've done some loudspeaker refinishing work for him, and was going to let him have it for $50, untested.
Then, on a whim last night, I fixed the broken wooden base, oiled the base up, set the turntable up, and listened to it playing a familiar Jesse Winchester record through my NAD preamplifier and Sennheiser headphones. It sounded great!--just as good as my fancier turntable in my main system.
Next, I went to eBay to see what these things are selling for these days. I figured it would be in the $150 range. To my surprise, early AR-XAs are going for anywhere from $300 to $450, depending on condition. It turns out that they're revered by vintage audiophiles, and that the cat is out of the bag about how good they sound. Mine has no dust cover, but it works perfectly and looks almost minty, so my guess it's worth about $350.
The lesson: If you have something old and cool around your house, be it a 1960s KLH radio, an old Singer sewing machine, a painting by an unfamiliar artist, or old stereo gear, don't "give it away," unless it's to someone you love. Check eBay and other sources to see what you have on your hands.
I'll be keeping this old turntable for now.

@fishtiger58 I love the warmth of the music itself. Digital is getting there, but it's not as good as analog yet.

My daughter very rarely allows anything to leave our possession without her getting some money out of it, pony! She sells everything on eBay! LOL!
Good catch, too!

@TheHorse Nourish it?
Just the opposite, pony! I tend to give things to people who need them for one purpose or another. My child watched me doing that all her life. She always felt people were taking advantage of me and determined that she wouldn't let that happen again, on her watch.
She loves me!

@DaddyEvil Hmm. Deep stuff. If we give freely, it's the "right thing" to do in some belief systems. Some will appreciate it. Some will take advantage of it. Lovejoy came and picked me up when my truck blew up100 miles North of Santa Barbara, in SLO. He was that kind of guy. I'd do the same for a friend. I remember him when I teach my classes.

A little research pays off!!
I have an antique piano that my family wants to let go free since it is so large + bulky, but I have seen restored ones selling for a lot so we ended up keeping the piano.

@TheHorse Yes, the piano is playable, needs a tune though! I am unsure of the piano name (not home right now to confirm!)

This is very good advice. You never know when something has reached a high perceived value. Perception is reality in this case.

@ElizabethWallace So do I. I got some speakers to work on yesterday. Woo hoo! Maybe I'll do a post about it.

@TheHorse I love the wooden cases that you restore. I really prefer real materials, like wood, to fake ones.

Good advice. I have a few things that might be valuable. I've given some things to my granddaughter who is selling them on EBay. I told her she could keep whatever money she gets. I know very little about selling things on EBay but she does it all the time and with three children, they can use the money, so I can help them out that way.
Your knowledge and description of your turntable was excellent. My youngest son is like that with things that interest him. How you remember all those details is amazing to me. He is a very detailed person also.

Excellent advice @TheHorse . That's why some people who have garage sales have no idea what some of their 'stuff' is actually worth.
