About that illegal occupation of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge

I will respond to a request from Robin Lamb, @troyburns to write something about the illegal occupation of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Oregon by a bunch of right wing armed militants. I would recommend looking at the Southern Poverty Law Center website to begin with. That organization tracks "hate groups," militia movements, the Ku Klux Klan (yes, they are still around), neo-Nazis and other assorted right wing crazies in the US. They lay out some very good info on what is happening at Malheur and the different groups involved. I live in Oregon, hundreds of miles away from Malheur, a necessary stopping-off place for hundreds of species of migrating birds. Thousands of birds were once slaughtered there for nothing more than their feathers, used to decorate ladies' hats. President Teddy Roosevelt made Malhuer a wild life sanctuary in 1908. The groups involved, more than one, are creating a situation that must be addressed by government. Just last night the majority at a community meeting in the nearby town of Burns, Oregon asked the out of state gunmen to leave the area. Today, their vandalism of the property and illegal occupation continues. Their actions will almost certainly end badly for them and the refuge. I suggest checking the Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) for updates. This is too big a subject to cover in a MyLot discussion, but I wanted to express the opinion of one Oregonian, shared by most of the states' citizens.

These whack-jobs have no respect for the environment, wildlife, other humans or our laws. I don't know the solution, but it would be helpful if they did not have military grade weaponry.

@JamesHxstatic Great idea. Where are all the covert government agents we see in movies all the time?

It's weird how dangerous these people can be. They have a right to their opinion but not to act on it.

Those people are fanatics and all fanatics are dangerous. They should be forced out of there.

@JamesHxstatic makes my blood boil. If only it were possible and not considered illegal it would be great to send someone in there and just blast those idiots right out of there. The heck with laws in this case. I will put in a prayer that the birds and animals are protected and that this gets resolved in the best possible way.

I agree Anna. The specter of the Ruby Ridge and Waco fiascos are haunting federal law enforcement.

I read troyburns article, so I'm interested in your point of view. This has been going on for some time now, hasn't it?

Just over two weeks now. This morning's news discloses that local employees of the US Fish & Wildlife Service (who run the refuge are being followed and their homes are watched.

Thank you @amadeo. These people are terribly wrongheaded. The "original" owners of the land, forced off of it in the 1870s, are the Northern Paiute indian tribe, who live on a reservation nearby.

At least they haven't shot anyone. I'd imagine the FBI would move in more quickly if they hurt someone.

Not yet. There is more than one bunch of these domestic terrorists there, not on the same page. Some brave men from the Hunters and Anglers Assn. tore the temporary sign they had put up over the Malheur Wildlife sign off and posted a FB video while doing it. I admire them. The local sheriff plans on billing the freeloaders $70,000 per day for county costs too.

Good to read your take on this situation, James. I can't help wondering whose interests are being served by this unlawful occupation. The protesters don't seem to have gained much support from other ranchers and Oregonians, but they have won support from other militia groups. So, is this really about land rights, or is it in fact about tyrannical government and a "threatened" Constitution? I think you have to buy the second option to see any merit in what these well-armed attention seekers are doing.

There is no merit in what these out of state interlopers are doing. The local government and county Sheriff have asked them to leave, the majority of townspeople in Burns asked them to leave, yet they continue to vandalize and commit more crimes.

You have to wonder why they want to be there in the first place. Are they publicity seekers?
