First it was bananas; now it’s cauliflower! What’s next?

The hunt is on for new banana to replace the Cavendish variety that many of us have known and loved since childhood. There is a dread banana blight stalking every banana producing country on earth. It apparently can't be stopped, so scientists must find a new one that tastes good and can resist the dreaded disease. It is slow going. Now, I hear that cold weather in California and Arizona is ruining the cauliflower crop. Prices are up a lot! I grabbed one this afternoon for $3.99 and it is not organic! For Pete's sake! What is next? Please say it isn't broccoli! Not Brussels sprouts, nooooo! What’s your favorite vegetable?

Cauliflower has jumped here as well. I paid 6.99 for one last week. That is Canadian funds so think what it would be in US. All of our prices on fruits and vegetables are rising fast.

I refuse to pay such high prices, I prefer to go with something cheaper.

Wow! That is a shocking price alright. We ate the one in the picture tonight. I cut it into florets, seasoned with garlic, salt & pepper and marjoram, then baked it and added parmesan and parsley then under the broiler for five minutes, delicious.

i agree with @Platespinner 'n mankinds desire to create'll those hybrids 'n such've not been a good thingy. the addition 'f pesticides 'n chemical fertilizers don't help none neither. $3.99 fer a head'f cauliflower (adorable pic, btw) 's 'bout what we pay fer 'em't the peek'f season. heck, ya can't touch'n organic one fer less'n $6 'round these parts! hmm, my fav veggie? used to be broccoli, 'n i still adore it. jest aint the same when its been liquified :( which's the only way i can partake'n it these days. green beans perhaps?? not that i'm o'erly fond'f 'em, jest happens to be a veggie i can eat 'n digest these days that aint gotta be run through a blender, lol.

My favorite are artichokes and asparagus, potatoes of course are not vegetables but tubers. They are in danger here in the south of Switzerland, because this winter is too warm.

I don't have a favorite, but I do eat carrots every day. They are very healthy and make an easy snack.

I like carrots too. We buy multi-colored ones at farmers' markets in season and at Trader Joe's too. The deep red or maroon ones are really good.

@JamesHxstatic I too am a Trader Joe's fan. I buy the little peeled carrots. This encourages me to eat them more often.

I love asparagus and it's always been expensive. I grow my own. I grow brussel sprouts too. I'm not much for fruits but we have 5 or 6 different fruits growing in our yard. I didn't hear this about bananas, one fruit I do like go figure.

@JamesHxstatic I don't think it is hard to grow, my dad used to have it in the garden. You have to avoid picking it for the first year or so , to let it get established.

All the prices of vegetables in our place have gone high all because of the recent typhoon. So you are not alone in this predicament.

I was unaware bananas were in trouble. I hope they can come up with a solution to stop the disease soon. I don't like cauliflower, but paying $3.99 for one is ridiculous! My favorite vegetable would be broccoli. I hope nothing happens to it too.

It is so hard to pick just one vegetable. Broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, squash.....just don't feed me the same veggies day after day after day.

Lucky dog you I say. I paid $4.99 at our local grocer today. We had flooding in the crop areas which has been resolved but the prices are still up. The flooding happened around Christmas. Sweet potatoes haven't been looking too good lately but I lucked out this evening. I came across a homeless man selling some veggies a kind lady let him pick so he could (hopefully) make enough $$ for a room tonight. He had some of the prettiest little sweet potatoes you ever saw. I like them young and tender and bought him out.

I loved bananas as a kid. So much so, a bunch would disappear super fast. I no longer desire to eat them, though I occasionally do. I'm a fan of raw cauliflower, not of cooked. I don't like broccoli at all. Brussel sprouts can be delicious, but it depends on the sprouts and the cook. I much prefer (sadly) the expensive vegetables: artichokes, asparagus, avocados and such. Yes. And eggplant.

I like raw cauliflower too and it good cut small and stir fried with some garlic. We are able to get avocados for 99 cents at Trader Joe's.
