What Not to Pray For

One of the first things I learned when I became a Christian was the one thing we don't need to pray for - patience. It seems God is only too willing to make sure this prayer gets answered. He does that by giving us circumstances in which we need a lot of patience. Last week in my counseling session the pastor asked me what he could pray with me for. With a lot of hesitation I told him patience. Since I asked I had a huge blow-up argument with my older son - Saturday. And yesterday the brake line broke on the car. Two serious situations that demand patience. Also for the consequence of fixing that brake line - waiting another couple months for my computer. They say be careful what you pray for and ask for. You just might get it. I can guarantee if you ask anyone to pray for you regarding patience, God will give you circumstances in which patience is required. It happens every time. Have you prayed for patience and seen that prayer answered right away? Did it work? Did you have the patience to get through the circumstance? Thanks for reading.

I actually knew this about praying for patience and I did not want the trials it produced.

When I told him patience, I knew and expected there would be consequences. I just wasn't ready for them.

asking for patience is like asking for an "interesting" life. that's kinda like daring a cop to throw the book at you

I bet the cop was one who never turned down a dare. I wouldn't exactly call it interesting, stressful perhaps, but not interesting.

That makes a lot of sense, and I never looked at it like that.

Basically you pray for everything, even patience if you want the trials that will give you.

@HanVanMeegerin Basically it's like this. You know the problems you face and the needs in your life. That's what you pray about. If you do that you will never be confused.

I believe we all struggle with patience because we want what we want now. God may allow our circumstances to change as a challenge for us to see how we'll respond. It's one way we grow and mature. I use to struggle with when things changed but now I look at it as growth session from the Lord. Still not always a fan but I understand better it is for my good not harm. Have a blessed day.

The trials, the problems and all troubles we get along the way are meant to work patience in us. But still,, I ask God for patience all the time.

I truly agree with this. I remember to always pray for this and yet my son always get me to my limit. After a few deep breathe, I face him again a little calmer.

I prayed for patience once. It was a big mistake. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

The earth on which we live is just a big schoolhouse to learn the lessons that prepare us for heaven. God allow circumstances in our lives for us to see where we are still falling below the mark for us to seek Him for assistance in overcoming and yes that includes patience. Look at the circumstances as sandpaper coming to sand off what needs to be sand off.

I agree. I just don't want too much sandpaper at one time.
