I Hope to See or Talk to the Doc

My usual approach to aches and pains is to stretch them out, sleep them out or wait them out. I often seem to have them because I have fibromyalgia. Well I have had an increasing amount of pain this week and none of those approaches is working. I slept four hours and now I am up because of the pain. I e mailed the doctor and will go with my husband to the town where the doctor is, hoping to get a phone call from her. Personally, I believe this may be a side effect from a prescription I started on, but before discontinuing it, I am going to see what the doctor says. I sure hope this is not one of those situations where you are given medicine and then given MORE medicine for the side effects of the first one. I will talk with you guys later. If it is night time I hope you are sleeping well with pleasant dreams. If it is daylight, enjoy your day.

I feel for you as I also have fibromyalgia and my pain can be horrid at times. My doctor put me on Savella and it has been a life saver although it can cause nausea which he gave me medicine for.

I just started on Metformin for diabetes. I usually have my fibro pretty well managed, because it is not severe. However this week has been awful, and the pain I am having can be a Metformin side effect.

@MarshaMusselman It also turns out that there is something else, not a prescription, but a supplement the doctor wanted me to try that also can have this same side effect. We will eliminate one at a time and see what happens. I like to think that if I were to work at it hard enough I would not need either of them. Wishful thinking.

I hope the doctor has answers for you without giving you more meds to counteract the first group, like you're hoping. I didn't know you had fibromyalgia, I know it causes you to hurt all over all the time, but other than that I don't know much about it. I've hurt from joint pain for about twenty years although the pain is different and moves around. Some years or days are worse than others. I think the worse pain, for me is sciatica. I hope no one gets it, or that it lasts too long. I've had it for two months now and even though I don't have the shooting pain that most experience, the leg cramping isn't much better. I've begun an exercise plan hoping to strengthen my muscles in my thigh, legs, and butt area with the goal of that nerve not being pinched any longer. Would stretches or exercises help the fibromyalgia at all?

They really are not sure what causes fibro, and what you describe sounds a lot like it as well. It is classified as related to arthritis. Yes, being active helps fibro and it definitely makes me feel better. In retrospect I have had symptoms since my twenties. I have had sciatica in the past. A particular stretch that I did and will do when it flares up is to stand with my back against the wall, tilt my pelvis to flatten my back, tighten my stomach and do a deep squat two or three times. That usually relieves the pain.

@GardenGerty I'm not able to do any squatting. I babied one knee years ago and it doesn't extend correctly anymore. At the time I thought I had a meniscus tear, but the specialist said 'no'.. Had I not babied it, it probably wouldn't have gotten this bad. For sciatica, I've found it helps to pull one leg over the other while lying on my back and grab my opposite knee or thigh for a hold, but it does not relieve it when I have to stand for hours at a time.

My DIL has fibro and the pain is so bad that she is bedridden for days. She has used a tens unit to help with the pain, but I am not certain how well it works for her.

My fibro is pretty well managed. I often try to convince myself I do not have it. Some of my most painful areas are actually from old injuries when I did harder stuff than I should have. Recently I have been using a topical essential oil treatment called Outback Pain Relief and believe it helps a lot. It is on Amazon and at CVS.

I was able to see and visit with the doctor. We have made a plan to figure out what the problem is and get it resolved. It may be this med or it may be a supplement she suggested that I should take.

Fibromyalgia is something to deal with. Doctors suggest exercise to decrease the pain. I hope you feel better.

This is a different pain than my fibromyalgia which I do mostly manage with activity. That is why I am concerned because it is not caused by my fibromyalgia. It is a different type of pain than I have ever had before.

I was able to see the doctor. We will skip a few doses of the one medicine and see if it gets better. I have the option of some muscle relaxers and there is also something else she has me taking that we may leave off if this is not the problem.

@GardenGerty Good luck, I put my back out today and although I have been offered painkillers, I never fill the prescription. I just grin and bear it for a few days until its back to normal, its really short lived.

It is either that medicine or a supplement she wanted me to try. We have a plan to work out just what it is and to deal with it.

The doctor did call me and was able to see me. She confirms that my muscles have tightened up on both sides of my spine and we have a plan to see if it is the medication.

I hope that works, or something like a chiropractor or a physical therapist!

I have fibromyalgia myself its hard to deal with as far as the pain is sometimes even getting worse at times then doesn't work either.

Make sure your doctor is aware that you don't just want another pill to mask the symptoms, but want to find out what is causing your pain.

If you are taking cholesterol medication, it can cause pain syndromes. I don't know if that applies to you or not, but it is common and people who get it should not take cholesterol meds, as the pain is a symptom of something more serious.
