Those Poor Powerball Lottery Winners!

So by now everyone should be aware that three people matched the winning numbers for the record-breaking $1.6 billion Powerball Lottery drawing this past Wednesday. The three winning tickets were sold in California, Tennessee, and Florida. For the record, I am not the winner from Florida! lol
Let's just see how these recent lottery winners really made out, shall we?
After splitting the jackpot three ways, taking the lump-sum payout instead of the 30 year annuity, and paying Uncle Sam his fair share of taxes, these poor people are only going to pocket about $175 million each.
And to that I say..."Suckers!" Good luck making THAT last...
But then again, I almost don't want to play the lottery anymore, with their puny little $1 million jackpots and all! Geez, a million doesn't buy any luxury these days...
Hahahaha!

@moffittjc I could really use that money right now! I am so far behind in life it's not funny anymore. And most of it requires money to move ahead.

Please don't stress about the money situation. Just enjoy life as best as you can, with or without the money you need. Most people are broke, or don't have enough money to do what they want to do. I think it's natural for us to stress over money woes, but a lot of times we're are missing the greatest things in life happening all around us that don't take any money at all.

@VivaLaDani13 We have a very large massage school here in Gainesville. I always laugh when I drive by it, because they have two very large sculptures of hands set up in front of their building.

@moffittjc aw no I totally agree with you! I can make my own fun lol But money for me doing another course would be good. Can study massaging. It isn't cheap to study that.

Honestly, I'd be happy if I won $10 on a scratch-off ticket.

@moffittjc Same. I realized yesterday I won $10 on a Cash4Life ticket, and I was actually excited about that. lol

If I ever won the lottery, I would definitely hire an estate planner on my team of professionals that I hire to advise me.

@moffittjc Start to plan now.
Get the names of top tax lawyer, top mortgage banker, top estate planner, top insurance agent, and read a lot of books about it.
Once you have done the homework, the money will come.
There is no "if" once you have started on the path to riches.

@scheng1 I don't ever play the lottery, so I don't ever have to worry about hiring all those teams of professionals!

@moffittjc It was the same in with Football Pools winners in England, those that won the million pound prizes typically traded up their house and car for a more expensive model, and had them free and clear of loans, but then they typically needed to go back to work within a few years.

@pgiblett The way I see it, if all (or any) of us were able to manage our money wisely, we wouldn't ever need to play or win the lottery ever!

You and I may be smart enough to put that money to work for us to earn even more money. However, I sometimes question the intelligence of many people out there! Reading up on research that has been conducted on lottery winners over many years, a good portion of them end up broke after 5 years! That sounds to me like most people are not intelligent enough to use that money wisely!

Trust me when I say I could definitely make $175 million work for the rest of my life.

I'm pretty sure I could also stretch that money out to last me the rest of my life. Now if I would just win the lottery so I can prove myself...

@porwest I think I could manage on such a pitiful sum of money.

@moffittjc Well, let's see. $175 million invested conservatively would give you an annual draw of dividends and interest of $10.5 million without ever touching the principal. That would be a lot of trips to Disney and of course, you'd do just fine. lol

The winners from Tennessee were on the Today show this morning

@moffittjc Their attorney told them to do it. They wanted to be the ones to get the word out directly. I think they were wrong in what they did.

@AbbyGreenhill I agree. I think they were wrong as well. I don't know if I would trust that attorney anymore if that was the recommendation he/she made to the winners. Do you happen to know if Tennessee is a state that requires lottery winners' names to be made public? Some states require it, and some will let you remain anonymous.

They actually came forward publicly? That could be dangerous. I would want to remain as anonymous as possible, within the limits the law allows.

I'd be perfectly happy winning $50,000! I'm not greedy by any means!

That is true! Which would mean each individual person gets even less money! By the way, I was just having a little fun with this post, kind of being sarcastic that the winners were "only" getting $175 million! I would be happy to just get $1 million! lol

If they had to pay state income tax they would get less.

Thankfully I live in Florida where there is no state income tax! I would hate to live in a high-tax state such as New York. I could imagine that after local, state, and federal taxes in that state, there wouldn't be much left to go to the winner.

@moffittjc The tax rate for states with state income tax is 40 percent or so they said on the news.

@AbbyGreenhill If the state tax is 40%, and the federal tax on winnings is close to 50%, then that means 90% of your winnings will go to taxes? That just sounds crazy! I'm glad I don't live in a state that charges a state income tax!

When I buy a lottery ticket, I buy one for each of the three games. That costs me four dollars when I play, which is not too often. Where else can you have so much fun for just four dollars?
By the way, I would have been happy winning any of the games, even if it was "only" $1 million.

I agree with you! I would be perfectly happy with "only" a million dollars! I was just having a little fun with my post, somewhat mocking the grand scale of the money involved in the most recent Powerball!

@moffittjc Mock away. It is fun and harmless, unlike the mean prank the son of that nurse in Pomona pulled on her. What a brat.
