Leipzig and J S Bach

While we were in Leipzig in 2015 we visited the J S Bach Museum. We are both fond of classical music and welcomed the chance to go through the museum. On many of our excursions through various museums we had had good value from the audio sets available but here we had to hand over our passports as security which made me hesitate somewhat. In a room full of old instruments we were able to listen to recordings featuring the instrument we were viewing. The church to which Bach was attached was quite plain compared to some of the opulence we'd seen in other churches. Do you know any of Bach's music? I learnt some of his pieces when I was studying piano.

I love Bach's music. There is something very inspiring about listening to it. Our daughters also learned some of his pieces when they learned to play the piano.

Some of his children did really well in musical fields too.

He wrote so much music didn't he? And I think he had 20 children from his two marriages. Obviously he didn't have to take them to scouts, soccer, hockey and piano lessons.

@Auntylou I don't know when he would have had time to do so but you're probably right. His second wife learnt piano as there is a book of pieces written for her to learn.

My daughters who play many instruments have a Bach piece here and there that I love to hear. The beginings of music

@JudyEv for the bach pieces to become orchestral they have all had to be adapted for certain instruments. My daughter plays the modern piano but does not want to venture to try the organ

Many of his pieces have been transcribed for other instruments than the one originally intended. He was more concerned with writing 'music' than writing for a particular instrument - except for the Preludes and Fugues which were intended to show the benefits of tempered tuning.

I'm a big fan of classical music. When I attended university, I had to take a class on classical music. That's when I first discovered my love of that genre of music!

@JudyEv I have a friend of mine who is like that with oldies rock n roll. He can hear any song from the 50's or 60's and instantly know the title and the artist. He is probably right about 99% of the time. And this guy wasn't even born until the 70's!

@moffittjc There used to be a music quiz show on TV and the two leaders of each team were incredible. Sometimes there'd only be the opening chord played and they'd know the song. Some of the older R&R music is still very popular. It was a magical era really.

Classical music is very interesting. Vince will listen to a piece on the radio and then guess the composer. He is right 90% of the time.

I am a big Bach fan. I played classical piano and he was among my favorites. I have a huge music collection, but return to Bach all the time.

I think most people would have heard some music by Bach even if they weren't aware of it.

I have classical music on all day. The museum sounds lovely. I love the way experts pronounce Bach. Like a cough.

Yes, unless you're a native German speaker it's difficult to get that guttural sound.

He was such a prolific composer. He had to come up with new church music every Sunday. That's pressure for you.

@Auntylou Yes, these were mass parts in three and/or four-part harmony but he'd dash them off in no time.
