Do you buy things you don't need now but might need later?

This morning we popped around to the recycling shop to see if our cat, Baloo, had done any better in chasing down a mouse that had been annoying the shop manager. Baloo hadn't performed and was putting his role of Assistant Manager seriously at risk by not sorting out the little rodent. Whilst we were there we took a look in the 'back room' where all the kitchen electricals live and picked up a hardly used Kenwood food processor with lots of different attachments, all for the sum of £10. We have a Kenwood - in fact we're on our second after my husband blew up the motor trying to knead dough - so we don't strictly need another right now. But one day we will, and knowing that there's a spare in the garage will mean it's less traumatic when our current one finally gives up the ghost. I wouldn't buy a 'spare' if the price was much higher but when my husband send the original Kenwood Chef to food processor heaven, we had to buy one second hand on eBay and paid more than we'd intended to. This time we'll be ahead of the game. Well done Baloo. Not much of a mouser but he has useful friends.

Stockpiling takes up space as well... says he, with several spare items taking up garage space that means the car stays on the driveway...

I heard some people put cars in garages but I've never met any.

@boiboing It does seem such a waste of space to just use the garage for the car - it's empty 50% of the time that way!

We buy some things to have on standby when the price is right.

I don't as I usually don't have spare money to spend on things I don't need at the moment, even when its a good deal. Actually I'm a bit behind on things I do need.. but am slowly catching up. I just bought gloves for me, hubby, and the 13 year old son although winter is about half over. The 9 year old could use new snow boots.. but his are usable for now, I can find a nice pair on clearance next month for him to use next year.

But now that you have a spare one, I bet that the one you are using right now will never break down!

Then it makes the £10 new one a very cheap insurance policy.

My husband had to have an old fashioned grater (I don't know the real name of it) So he got one, then at a yard sale he found another better one with more parts, then yet another yard sale he found he best one - still had the book of instructions, etc.So why three sets, because he 'might' need all three in the future. He gave one to his mom, we sold one at a yard sale and he has one set he's never used!

I tend to do that for my sound system I use for live bands and such. I have a tendency to pick up extra amps and speakers and mixers and such if I see a really good deal even if I don't need them, because it's always better to have a spare handy if needed, since that stuff does tend to break down occasionally. Which is how I've come to have 9 power amps, 3 mixing consoles, and 18 speakers... And I'll probably never need some of it, but it's there just in case, because you never know...

@boiboing We don't buy additional products for just in case but we do buy spare parts and such things. Here in Latvia the rule is if the darn thing can be fixed fix it and it will be cheaper.

Come on, a man just can't have too many amps, can he?

That was a bargain! I have an iron which I got on special offer a couple of years ago as many irons had broken before. Since I got this last one though, the one I use at the moment is being very good and has not packed up. I must have had it over ten years too!

I buy things like T.T, light globes and household supplies I know we will use. I hate to buy too food or such ahead because it gets old. If you use the processor you have now a lot you will probably be in need of one sooner or later.

That's a very good point. It's not worth overbuying food.

@boiboing ...I hear of good deals but they need to be used up within three months. And I will wager that the good price is because the stuff is old to begin with.

I tend to buy a lot of back up items, sometimes I don't even know why because I know once the product goes bad (ex: an toaster) a newer better model will be out and I'd want the latest. But, I have another back up toaster because it was on sale, in fact the same exact one currently using...

Congratulations Baloo great jobs. I wonder why husbands to not listen when we say that the trying to knead the dough blews up the motor.

Not routinely but if it was something I used a lot and I saw a bargain like you did then yes I might well do that.

Yes, we bought a fantastic food blender a few years back at £10 instead of £60 and have kicked ourselves ever since that we didn't by more than one.

If something is on sale and we know it is something we will use and we have the extra money for it, we will get it. We always keep an extra coffee maker on hand for when one goes out. Got to have our morning coffee.
