A Simple Means of Transportation

At our hometown here in the Philippines , as you can see in the picture , we have this bicycle with a side carriage which we call “padyak “ in our Bicolano dialect . It can bring you to other streets of the town at a cheap price of only 5 pesos or $.11 . If you want to be brought to a far place it can go to as much as 20 pesos ($.11) or more . Actually , it is also what I ride in the evening when I arrive from the city where I work , to take me to the subdivision in the next town where we live . It costs 10 pesos ($.22) . I love riding in it because it’s so refreshing after a day’s work and easy to ride . At daytime when you ride one , you can see well the sights as it passes by them . Such is a simple and cheap means of transportation here in our province for short distances . Would you like riding this " padyak " too , given the chance ? What about in your place , what's the cheapest public transport do you have ?

Do you ride it yourself or someone rides for you and you sit in the side carriage? The cheapest we have here are the auto rickshaws. The limit is for 3 plus driver. I remember when I was on holiday a known rickshaw driver took 9 of us!!!!

We ride in the side carriage as you can see in the picture . It can carry 2 persons but of medium built only . Oh we have that here also , just a bit longer because it has an 8 person seating capacity . And it only costs 8 pesos or $ .17 per person only .

So cheap indeed and so nice to ride for short distances. Yes, a tricycle costs a bit more specially if you ride alone . Here , when i ride alone from the city to the place where i work , i pay 20 pesos . But if i am not in a hurry because i will already be late , i take the jeep which only costs 8 pesos . Though , when we ride a tricycle with other people it's only 8 pesos per person .

It does seem rather hard work for whoever is doing all the pedalling all day, but would be interesting.

@SIMPLYD I would have expected it to become difficult after doing so for a long day.

If it is only one person , it's not that hard i guess . But if there are two persons that's what is hard though .

@Asylum That is true , because i have observed that all the drivers are of slim built . It's actually a good exercise , although they are exposed to the sun and the rain , except that some have big umbrella to shade the driver .

I do not know if I would like to ride, I would feel pity for the poor guy who has to pedal. We tried something similar for fan and It was very hard to pedal. There is nothing like this in our country, the cheapest public transport is the bus $1.00 the cheapest ticket.

The most that it can carry is only two persons but that is seldom and would cost double . And that means it will be hard pedalling indeed . But for one person , they seem to pedal so easily and they would sometimes be fast , that i will tell them to slow down which they will do .

@LadyDuck I think so . And it's an exercise for them that's why they were all of slim built .

This sounds a wonderful idea but it wouldn't be very safe in our traffic conditions.

These padyaks are only in towns . They are meant to transport you for a short distance .

It looks an interesting mode of transportation which you call 'padyak'. Here in our city (specially sub-urban areas) similar means of transport is available which is called cycle-rikshaw. It is cheaper option. However, sometimes, due to movement of heavy traffic along side, one feels scared to travel in cycle rikshaw. From safety point of view, it is not very safe. @SIMPLYD We have rickshaws which come with a roof. Yes, this is a risky mode of transport in between heavy traffic.

It looks similar to our padyak . Though ours have roof . Yours is so open . But i like that , because you can sight see well while it traverses the road . However , both are risky indeed from cars on the sides or even in front .

It is really a convenient means of transportation whose strong point is to be able to ride on narrow streets where people can't arrive by taxi .

There you are a bicycle made for two! In India there are many cycle-rickshaws and I have seen some touting fares in London and Paris. I would never wish to ride in the padyak, because I like to be in control. The cheapest form of public transport in our town is the Bus, if you can stand to spend time waiting for it.

Wow that's really cheap. When I was a child my Dad made a sidecar similar to those in the picture. He fixed it on to a tandem bike and he and my mother rode that and we three children piled into the sidecar. It was fun.

If you are talking about paying for transportation the cheapest here is by city bus. The last I knew it cost $1. But that was several years ago. If you tried riding a padyak down the middle of the street here, like in your photo, you would be ran over. It would be interesting to ride in one.

we have the tricycle, my lady. when I want to go home quick, I tell the driver that I will pay P30.00, and he should not get other passengers inside the side car. we also have the horse-driven calesa, but once I rode on a calesa and I paid P8.00, the "kutsero" said that I should pay P30 too because horses, though do not use gasoline or petroleum, eat grasses which they buy "daw".

It's a good thing we have these different type of transportation specially when we want to go home quickly . We also have tricycle , but like you said they ask for a higher fare . So , i always ride the padyak . But you know when i am feeling mataray and the tricycle would ask for that much , i would say " ANo ka taxi ? " and just look for another ride .

@SIMPLYD hahaha! We are the same,my lady. when I want to board a tricycle and pay P30, so the driver can get 2 to ride at his back, and he asks for P40, I would raise my right eyebrow and say " as if I am from another place ah. i will report you to the DTI (or any office)". Immediately the tricycle will zoom away.

@SIMPLYD a smelly driver? But I just consider them as hard-working workers so their smell should not be a problem for me.

Yes, I would like this and think it's a great idea. Gives money to the person who wants to drive it and gives a break to you- ha! I would especially love it since my hip is bad and I don't walk as well as I did. Looks like fun too!

I am actually riding the padyak or we call it sidecar here whenever I shop in the nearby grocery store. It is cheaper than riding tricycle. They charge only P10 from the shop to my home while trycycle fare is P24.

In my hometown we have rickshaw puller which is even cheaper, but the place where I am in now is costlier and the lowest rent of any transportation would be more than a dollar except for that of the public one.
