Unusual Migraine Aura

I have been subject to migraines since I was a small child. At 4 my family took me to a eye doctor thinking that my eyes were causing the headaches. I started to develop auras when I was in my early 20s. Usually they are visual and come in a wide variety of styles. I see all sorts of different things. Last week I had my first auditory aura. I laid down to take a short rest and there was a constant humming in our bedroom. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I blocked my ear and wow it was coming from inside my head. It was followed by the headache so I decided to do some research and yes, there really are auditory auras. Oh terrific, one more thing to signal a headache coming on. Have you ever heard of auditory auras or experienced one?

I have migraines too, but only get the visual auras, they make me feel worse than the headache usually. They last like 20 minutes then the headache comes.

I actually had a visual one this morning, bummer, I have had my arm go numb, lost my ability to speak and had major confusion. These I learned are also possible symptoms. But yes my visuals sound like yours.

@BelleStarr When I first started to get Migraines, I lost my ability to speak where I made sense, and had numbing on my hands, lips, and tip of my nose. That hasn't happened in a long time. Now it's just the visual aruas. A couple of years ago I cut sugar completely out of my diet for like 2 years and had NO Migraines that entire 2 years.

@fishtiger58 That's really interesting that cutting out sugar stopped the migraines. Are you eating sugar again now?

@BelleStarr It is good you have warning signs before the headache comes on you.

Not everyone gets auras but actually since they come before the headache it is possible to take medication to make sure it doesn't happen, it is an early warning system.

Never knew about the "auditory auras" but I do suffer from migraine aura. Just see zigzags and it always last 20 minutes. No pain involved in mine.

The pain comes when the migraine hits which is often as you say about 20 minutes to an hour later.

@marlina If I am lucky and take medication fast enough there is no real pain. The migraine goes into the background, I know it is there but it is not debilitating.

Poor you. I have heard of auditory auras in my schooling. Fortunately, I don't suffer from migraines, but feel your pain. I know how awful they can be.

The good news is the frequency has decreased as I get older and also the severity for the most part. But 3 in two weeks has me wondering what is triggering them. I have a weird question to ask you. Do you have carpet in your condo?

I've never experienced an auditory aura, I have had visual and even ones that I can smell and sometimes taste. The end result, the migraine, is always awful though isn't it? I hope that you're feeling better now. I'm dealing with a bit of a sinus headache myself at the moment, but nothing serious or even comparable to a migraine.

I am not quite sure what is triggering them here it is quite unusual for me to have 3 in 2 weeks, since menopause I have only had a hand full a year.

I had migraines since I was a kid for all my life, but they stopped a couple of years ago. I still have headaches time by time, but not as bad as in the past. My husband has auditory auras.

No, I've never heard of it before but I do get migraines every once in a while. It always starts out as a black spot in my vision, then I start seeing lightening like lights out of the corner of my eye that slowly moves to the center of my eye. If I'm lucky and take something at the first sign, it will go away.

@BelleStarr That is really weird, isn't it? The first few times I had a migraine, I would get sick as well. It really scared me the first time because I didn't know what was happening.

I do not get them, but one of our daughters has had migraines with auras since she was about 12. Interestingly enough, when she was 47, she also had a brain aneurysm. The doctors have said there is no connection, but we still wonder.

No that is completely new to me but my son suffered from migraines until we realized he can't do dairy well. I wonder if yours is triggered by a food or scent? Do you take anything for them? I know they can be debilitating.

@MarymargII Actually the aware is an early warning so I like knowing it is coming before it gets here so I can take premptive action.

@BelleStarr I used to get incredible headaches (wasn't sure if they were migraines) but they would come each month at that time but it only lasted through menopause- which was long enough! No aura but a really bad throbbing.

I've heard of auditory auras but never experienced one. I have suffered from headaches most of my life as well, starting in my late teens. Fortunately, I don't believe they are migraines. I sympathize with you. Headaches really affect the quality of life.

While I do get migraines, I haven't ever experiences any auras of any type. I do have an ongoing heart beat in my ear though especially at night. It's not related to headaches of any type as I have them while trying to sleep. They seem better now than they were for the last couple of years. It used to be only on my right ear, but sometimes now it's my left one also. I found that for that if I use an earplug it appears to mute the sound, which is strange I know. I'm going to start using some essential oils that my sister made up for me and she included one for migraines. I've yet to try it, but I'm hoping it will do wonders and will share later.

With my husbands Parkinson's he has trouble turning in bed and it requires so much effort it often wakes me up too and he has vivid dreams and talks, laughs and sometimes yells. @MarshaMusselman It sounds like we both have exciting nights!! lol

@BelleStarr I've used them for the last several months to tune out my husband's snoring so I could get better sleep, but I'm trying now to sleep without them. It took me a few days, but now I can ignore his noises for the most part, unless I'm up right before him to use the bathroom, then I'll hear when he gets up. He sits on the bed to dress and wiggles all around. (It's a bit of work getting dressed with only one leg. He does put it on soon after awaking , but it's a lot of motion on the bed while I'm trying to sleep).

Ok, I'm so glad I was just reading this. What timing! I had a visual aura last night! I had just pulled into my gym and starting having the vision issues that I had ONCE many years ago! I remember at that time being freaked out. But then it never happened again. So when I read this the other day, I thought "Oh I bet that is what I had back then!" anyway, so i walk into the gym with the plans to jog, but was very disturbed by my vision. So I sat on the couch and started googling, of course. I read they usually last anywhere from 5-60 minutes. And I'm thinking, ok, I hope it is on the short side because I tend to be hypochondriac at times. And then i get anxious. anyway, I'd say 20 minutes passed & it stopped. I went on to do my exercises. Anyway. Thank you! I think if i hadn't just been reading about this, I would have started to get all panicky worrying something was majorly wrong with me. :-)

I like to consider it my early warning system and it allows me to take medication so I don't end up getting the actual headache. I admit it freaked me out early on and the auditory one was strange as well. I am glad it was of help to you, this is why we write to pass on our experience to others, helping them in the process.

When you don't know about auras they can be startling. The first time I got one I kept blinking and blinking I couldn't figure out what was wrong with my eyes. About an hour later I knew that it was a migraine.

@BelleStarr That would be helpful. The nausea does come first and maybe if I really paid attention I would know that it is That nausea and not just an unsettled stomach. So I don't take medication until it is a full blown migraine. Luckily I do not get them often any more.
