I had responded to &JaBo ' s post http://www.mylot.com/comment/2888160/17149992/25112631 which explains what it was for them to have a bath in the good old days. With her encouragement I want to tell you what it was for us then. We got our water from the well. We have a well even now where we have shifted but we have installed pumps. Those days water had to be drawn from the well using a rope and goblet. We had a big bath room where there was a huge copper vessel which would be filled with water. It would be heated using firewood. Drawing well water was never given to us girls but only once a year when the well had to be cleaned we all pitched in and pulled the goblet tied to a rope which was lowered to the well where a man would fill it up. This process went on till the entire well was emptied. It was no doubt a tiring process but we had fun doing it together as at the end of it all we would get treated to something sumptuous which mother would keep ready for us. We even bathed at the well with cold water more for fun. Those were the days.

My grandmother had a well in front of her house. We used to draw water with a pail hang to a rope. We considered this like a game when I was a kid.

Those were the days, indeed! Wow! We depend on a well at our other house for all our water, but it is modern and does the work instead of us.

In a very big way. I can write a book on what we have now which we did not have then.

@JudyEv Just a few things - we had no phone, our toilets were outside, no tv, no computer, its only now that I have travelled so much round the globe, its only now that there a number of dishes in my cuisine - I could go on and on.

It looks like you enjoyed your well so much. In the olden days, we get our water from an artesian well, one that has a pump that is manually done.

@allknowing This is some thing I remember from childhood. The well, the drawing of water and the smoke from the bathroom when the water in big copper (or was it brass?)vessel was being heated using firewood.

So the man had actually to get into the well? My grandparents on my mother's side only had a well too. It used to be drawn up with a rope and pail, and it was always so cold and fresh tasting.

What would you call this vessel that was used, this part of the country to draw water. I used the word goblet. Is there another word for it?

@allknowing I wouldn't call it a goblet as to my mind that is just a drinking vessel. I'm not sure what I would call that, perhaps just a water carrier?

@jaboUK But it surely has a name (lol) And yes about that question they have to go down to the bottom of the well.

I love reading these childhood memories. We have a well also and an electric pump. My only time getting water from a well by hand was when camping. Those wells had hand pumps. So, I have never seen a well where you lower a bucket.

We never had buckets but something that looked like goblets made of copper. Reminds me of the song 'There's a hole in the bucket dear Liza............
