Good Morning Dove

Canada
January 31, 2016 7:59am CST
Yesterday as I was catching up on myLot this sweet bird came for a visit. It was warm outside so the door was open to enjoy the sounds of the water crashing on the beach. Strange that hearing crashing is music to our ears here but when at home crashing is not something you would want to hear. I love being this close to the water... Back to the bird. She inspected the whole railing on our deck, walking from one end to the other... Then she just sat there enjoying the view like we do from the sixth floor condo. At one point I got up slowly from the couch and moved closer to the door for a better photo but she had nothing to do with and she took off. I hope she comes back. I am thinking of leaving treats for her on the deck. The mourning dove because of it's sad and mournful sound it makes people think of death but historically it is a symbol of hope, peace and the Holy Spirit. I have a lot of them at my house in Canada, and I enjoy looking at them. In the winter they live under the bird feeders eating the seeds the other smaller birds drop. I imagine it's easier for them to live in Florida. At least it's a lot warmer. I've heard Mourning Doves are everywhere here in North America, are they apart of your neighbourhood too?

We have a few pairs of these doves in our neighbourhood too, one of my former neighbours told me that having these in our yard is supposed to be good luck. So maybe that was what he was bringing to you on your holiday!

We have lots of pigeons, but I don't think they are the same thing. I'm afraid I find their constant cooing a bit annoying when I'm in the garden in the summer. They repeat the same notes over and over

Pigeons and doves are two different species, I don't love pigeons either, they are annoying. The dove whispers in your ears and you appreciate their words, so soft and soulful.. I will look and see if I can find their voice... Just for you because I know you will make a poem about them ....for me. No pressure...

Wow, what a nice moment with that bird. There are lots of birds in my garden. It looks like they have made my garden their home. Sometimes, I would see them forming a long, long line in my fence but whenever I try to capture them with my camera, they fly back to the trees.

i've various species'f doves 'round here, though the eurasian bunch's winnin' out sadly. i do love hearin' 'em all though, with their songs. yer correct, many find their cooin' sad, but it always calms me to hear 'em. they all winter o'er here 'n we jest toss 'em out seed 'pon the ground. cute to watch 'em 'long with the robins 'n blue jays this time'f year. gives the sparrows a break's well...'til a dove decides the feeders a comfy place to take a nap anyhow, lol. 'round these parts we feel the same 'bout the sounds 'f crashin' water. 'tis been many years since i've been near'n ocean 'n i strugglin' to recall the thrill'f such. perhaps some day i'll remedy that :)

The mourning doves live here in Switzerland, there is a group of about 16 doves that always come to eat in my garden. They can be pretty annoying some days.

@PainsOnSlate They only stay around the tree where I have placed the biggest bird feeders, they are noisy, especially in the morning.

They do tend to move in groups, maybe families...they are pretty quiet around my house, they do make a mess when they gather together in my big wood lawn chairs...

I don't see many doves about, there are plenty of pigeons around but few doves. Living on the coast we are more like to see seagulls than doves. I went to Youtube as you suggested to jabo and searched and you are right they do sound different from pigeons.

We have gulls around the Great Lakes where I live. We also have doves. Thrust are quite different from each other. Glad to hear you saw Jabo while she was vacationing.

We have mourning doves around here too. I tend to see them around the puddles of water at the ends of the driveways most days in the summer. I don't see them much in the winter though.

We have many at north that gobble up the bird seed. I haven't seen any in South Florida.

Up north I have squirrel proof feeders that shut when something bigger than a song bird lands on it. The doves are too heavy for the feeders so they sit under the feeders and eat what is dropped.

@PainsOnSlate I will mention those to my husband. He's tried almost everything to keep the squirrels away.
