Don't Mess with the Dogs in Osterwieck!

I have written about my ancestors coming from Goslar in Lower Saxony, Germany. They also lived and worked in Osterwieck so we spent some hours there too exploring and photographing the ancient buildings. We got a chuckle out of several signs warning people against trespassing because of fierce dogs. One dog had a very impressive record having accosted/bitten/scared off 15 postmen, 11 burglars, 22 teenagers, 24 representatives or I guess, salesmen, and 7 GEZ. My Google translator said GEZ were German mafia. Does your dog have such a record and if so, is it written up for all to see? Added 5 Feb 2016: @MALUSE has kindly said in her comment that GEZ is an institution that collects money for watching TV and listening to the radio, not necessarily the mafia!

My ferocious dog just makes noise. She has never so much as nipped.

Making noise can be very off-putting to callers. She looks so lovely.

This is a funny sing, of course we have no one showing something similar, because aggressive dogs must be sent to special schools.

@JudyEv I avoid to enter a garden (or a house) where I know there is a dog free. You never know if they are friendly dogs.

@LadyDuck I'm the same. Vince has no fear of strange dogs and I am always telling him to be careful.

You would think twice about going into the yard, wouldn't you?

I have not heard of anything like that before and I am wondering if they even have a dog.

It could easily all for for show just to keep baddies out. Or maybe they have a dear old Lab who wouldn't hurt a fly.

Very funny! I never have seen someone hang the history of a dog in the front door.

I suppose that's more effective than just 'beware of the dog'!

I'd be taking notice of such a sign, just in case the dog mistook me for a teenager!

Teehee that would bring a good laugh out of me if I saw that post. Kind of like the old WANTED posters- listing what the criminal has done--haha!

@MarymargII We took photos of many quirky things - quirky to us anyway as we're not seasoned travellers - although I guess we're more seasoned than we were.

Surely it be more fun if they erected a sign inviting the mafia to stroke the dog.

What a terrible person to torment a dog in this way. I'm glad you found a good home for him. It's sad to have to leave pets behind.

My dog would have just wagged his tail at any stranger unless they came near any of the children. Than he would bark real loud. He never did bite anyone.

Dogs seem to know when something isn't quite right although they might be friendly at other times.

Am I correct in my assumption that the sign is intended to be funny?

@JudyEv Heh. It reminds me of the "kills" they used to put on fighter planes in WWII.

If it isn't meant to be funny, there are a few people carrying scars in the town.

I love that I was able to understand the sign. It must be due to my grandmother's Yiddush. No bad dogs in our house!

I had a sign out at the front of my property @JudyEv that warned of dogs. The sign said: Beware of Dogs, YOU WON'T LEAVE ALIVE. I had a 150-lb Akita, a 70-lb Pit Bull and a 65-lb German Shepherd. Someone 'tried' to steal the Pit Bull; bad mistake.

@JudyEv All 3 were hand and voice command. Living way out in the woods like I do, you'd be amazed at the people who think it's okay to jump over fences that say Do Not Enter or Private Property. It's no fun to have a rifle pointed at you.

Gosh, you weren't kidding were you? That sounds a bit like overkill (pardon the pun) unless you have a lot to protect. . I wouldn't fancy tangling with any of them.

@nanette64 In that case good for you. Some people have no respect of others - either persons or property. I gather you don't have them now? But you say you still in the woods. No need to answer if I'm being nosy. :)
