I'm not yet married nor into a relationship. I'm just thinking about my future and my future family. I have come up with this idea after @Mike197602 advised me this... "If there's one piece of advice I can offer you as an older person to a younger one...get yourself a secure home as soon as you can. It will remove a great deal of life stress for you if you can do this as soon as you're able." This made me think very deeply into life. Made me question myself, "Am i doing right for my future?", "Am i doing things to save up for my future family's expenses and needs?"... I know I'm still young and some of you would probably say that i should enjoy my life and don't worry about my future too much. But isn't it's much better to struggle now on your own so that your future family (especially my future kids) will not suffer those things like poverty? myLot is compose of adult members in general and many of you are way older than me... I'm seeking some advises from you, could you give me some? Your comments are very much appreciated!

Yes that is a wise way to do - save so you will be financially secured when you finally decide to get married . But don't get married yet , 22 is still a young age to marry . Enjoy your work and being a bachelor and search for a woman who is of wife quality .

Saving money is in my blood ever since i was born. I'm so thrifty (or clingy, some others say hehe) that it gets to the point that i won't buy snack foods 'coz i'm saving some money for some important personal things that i want. "search for a woman who is of wife quality ."...this is so hard. in fact i have this special woman in my heart whom i'm praying and hoping that we must be destined by each other by God.....

@else34 in the Philippines, a person has a choice if he/she wants to live together with his/her parents or not. what is your current job anyway?

You should worry about your future and prepare for the future. if not, you can never be happy. There are a few things you need to do when you are young. First is to get whole life insurance with critical illness coverage. Next is to learn about investing. Investing is not difficult, so do not let anyone fools you with their horror stories. You will learn about your dark sides, and that is not pretty, but once you learn to overcome your greed, fear, and negativity, you will become a person whom you can respect.

@trivia79 rent to own isn't very common here although many people are in those schemes. Most people rent something they have no option to buy.

what is whole life insurance with critical illness coverage? isn't it expensive at this early stage of my adolescent? did you mean by investing is investing in business? what do you mean by "do not let anyone fools you with their horror stories."?

@Mike197602 i thought you mean by renting is just spending on a house that will never be yours. but rent-to-own is something that can be yours soon. can you clarify about this thing?

I'd say securing a home is good if you are going to be in one area for a while, but if you drifted around for 8 years like I did, going for a home isn't easy. Affording your life is a good step as well. I'm still trying to work on the right steps. Avoid video games. I think that's sound advice!

@trivia79 It means I didn't settle down in one area for too long and moved from place to place. Most of this was because of the unstable economy. I've since landed in my home town. My parents called me back because they needed my help managing all their irons in the fire.

My advice would be to save for retirement now. There's a ratio given of 10/10/10 - 10% is your tithe to God - providing you're a believer and go to church. 10% goes into savings and 10% is yours to do with as you please. This of course refers to your paycheck. When you think about it, it's not that much, just 30% overall, and you live off the rest - household bills. If your employer does an employer match 401K do it. That will help you big time for your retirement. It's never too early to think about retirement. The sooner you start putting aware for it the better off you will be.

@trivia79 Ten percent to give to God's work isn't much and is what God requires of us. Your percentages are high. I suggest re-ordering your finances and get them in line with God's Word and everything else will fall in place.

Thank you very much for that advice! It's really helpful, especially the percentage thing. I'm a believer but I'm not that giving enough for that portion for church. in fact, the 3 things were my salary go through are: myself, savings, and contribution to my parents. It's like 50% (contribution), 40% (savings for some fixed future plans), 10% (expenses & allowance). There's no yet percentage for future stability like house.

I believe if you have a stable job then make good in that job to gain better position, as you are already saving, then do some good investments as well for additional income if you want. But remember that money is not everything, real stability can only be found in God. Put God first in your life and you will never go wrong.

"Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow you may die"No I'm only kidding, seriously my advice would be try to reach a point where you no longer have to work for money but make your money work for you, this is easier said than done so the least you could be is still work for money but you also have money that works for you at the same time so it is combined or multiple incomes( investments, insurances, business, apartment for rent etc...). This is easier done and prepared for while you are single, maintain and expand it till you decide to marry, choose very well the person you would marry cause a wrong move might affect what you have planned for when you were single. If you are a believer, don't forget to pray for guidance, divine intervention and always include God in your plans.

@trivia79" how can i make money work for me? could you give me some examples?" One example is if you have saved enough, buying a house is fine cause you do not need to rent, but buying an apartment building that you can rent out is the next step , people work their butts out to pay the rent while you sleep and collect every month, Their are many ways to do it and this is just one example. Your are a believer then pray for God's will, trust him that he will be the one to provide you with a partner. When you have a girl friend already, pray together, pray to God and ask him for blessings, give him your plans etc... he won't let you down, as you said it's a "natural process" make it God's natural process.

@DRADITISINGH I agree, making the right choice of a partner is very important cause once you marry, some assets would become conjugal property. Yes earning while sleeping some people have the notion that they only make money when they work, if you save enough, some of the money will work for you

the first line is applicable only for those who have no dreams how can i make money work for me? could you give me some examples? this line, "choose very well the person you would marry cause a wrong move might affect what you have planned for when you were single.", i think i can't do that. It's a natural process i think... Yes! I'm a believer!

Do you consider living to a richer country? Canada and New Zealand have a huge demand for butchers. If you can tolerate killing animals like pigs, cows, ostriches ,sheep and horses, you may consider this one. Canada pays 150 thousand pesos to Filipino butchers and they pay 200 thousand pesos to meat deboners. New Zealand pays twice. Imagine this, Working in any of those 2 countries will make you a millionaire in pesos for a year, They give citizenship and permanent residence too.

You already sound like a sensible young man. Yes you should think and plan for your future but you need to live today and enjoy yourself. Everything in moderation is the key. Save but also spend wisely. Don't forgo enjoying yourself otherwise you may become too insular and become too self sufficient and may not have room for anyone else in your life. You know if you find the woman of your dreams and she loves you it does not matter whether you are rich or poor she will love you for who you are rather than for what you have.

I was a bit worried when my name came up but I genuinely think many, if not all, mylot members will agree with me. The majority of our money goes on rent or mortgage in the UK and I suspect that'll hold true across many nations. Once you get a secure home that you own it will remove a massive amount of stress from your life. The sooner you do that the better in my opinion. That could be a one bedroom apartment or a three bedroom house. Getting a home you own is a VERY big deal in my opinion. Lets see what others think...it could be very interesting. Also, check out this very recent and relevant discussion. It isn't always about finance....emotions and stuff can come into play.
Today on the way to work, I overheard two persons talking about their accommodation problem. One person is lamenting that she has to move again because her...

Do you know that our founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, was educated in UK? He witnessed how renting work, and how the tenants did not have a sense of belonging, he vowed that Singapore would not face the same issue. Now, Singapore has one of the highest home ownership in the world at more than 90%.

@scheng1 I wish it is like that in my country, but here the cost of a home is pretty high even for average earning individuals like me. But I agree with @Mike197602 that it's better to have your own home than pay rent for something that won't ever be yours.

@Mike197602 People opt to rent because it seems like a faster way, but yes, in reality it's like burning money in ashes because you never get to own the property. I just wish terms in owning a home were more affordable.
