Yesterday Chinese all over the world celebrated New Year. And this year is the year of the monkey! To all wonderful Chinese in mainland China and Taiwan including those in Chinatowns in every cities of the world - HAPPY NEW YEAR!
My wife and I went to the mall yesterday to buy some personal necessities. Before going home, we ate lunch at the food court. An elderly Canadian couple, thinking we were Chinese, greeted us - "Happy New Year!" My wife and I smiled at them and I greeted them back - "Happy New year, too!"
The woman said they celebrate new year on January 1. I replied that we also celebrate new year on January 1. We are not Chinese, we are Filipinos and we are Christians. The woman, appeared surprised, mused - "O, I see!"
I could not forget the day a middle-aged Chinese man asked me - "Chinese?". I said no. "Vietnamese?". I said no. "Cambodian?" I said no. He looked at me momentarily then he said smiling - "Aha, Japanese!" Japanese are smart people, so I almost said yes. I said no. Then he asked: "Who are you?"
Whew!

An Egyptian touter tried to engage Vince in conversation once and the conversation was similar. 'American?'. 'No.' 'English?' 'No.' Ah, you from the moon.' Viince thought this was clever so said 'yes' whereupon the man said 'Ah, you know my people'.

@JudyEv hahaha! That is funny! The Egyptian, I guess, meant your husband was an alien like him when he asked if he was from the moon.

Really? You look like a Chinese or Japanese? Hihihi!
Somebody also asked me befpre if I'm a Chinese when I was reviewing in Manila. The student thought I was one of those students from a prestigious university with Chinese students. But when I said I am not and I am from the north too, she was surprised that I'm from the same province like her.
Happy new year! And happy vday!

@Lucky15 . . You know I came from the North (Ilocos), where Chinese pirate Limahong, Japanese bakero soldiers, and Spanish conquistadores settled long before we were born . . . so, I may have a touch of Chinese blood, a touch of bakero blood, and a droplets of Spanish conquistadores DNA . . that is why I may look Chinese at a certain angle, Japanese at another angle, and Cambodian, Laotian, Malaysian, Indonesian, Mangyan, and so on all angles! That was why the Chinese got confused of my nationality!
