30% Fewer Broken Bones

While skimming through the TV news yesterday, remote in hand, I saw a short bit about green tea. A recent study has shown that drinking green tea at least three times each day decreases the number of broken bones experienced by 30%. This is great news for all of us who have bones.
It is especially helpful news for those of us who fall into the category of being at risk for (or having) osteoporosis. Even if you have done the right things to build strong bones your entire life, you are at risk. I’ve exercised, lifted weights, walked and never drank to excess or smoked. I drank milk and ate green leafy foods, but here I am.
If you are female, over fifty, Asian or Caucasian and small boned then you are more likely to develop this ailment. But even men or those who do not fit this profile need to pay attention. Green tea drinkers have better bones than those who do not drink this beverage. Add to this drinking milk and exercising and you have a really good chance of avoiding age related broken bones.
I started drinking green tea recently to decrease inflammation. But I’m going to increase how much I drink now, because of the results of this study. It will be simple enough. I do best when I have a plan, so I created one yesterday. I’ll have a cup of tea midmorning, midafternoon and at about 8:00 in the evening. The green tea that I bought is decaffeinated, so it will not disrupt my sleep. I’ll leave a Pyrex measuring cup in the microwave and heat my water this way. I will keep a sliced lemon in the fridge, so that I can squeeze some into the brewed tea.
Any other tips on how to avoid broken bones caused by aging?

I like green tea a lot and generally have a cup in the afternoon. I will try to drink more and encourage Anne to do so too.

This sounds a really easy way to limit your risk. Weight-bearing exercise is supposed to be good. Dancing was one mentioned in the article I read.

I am one of the few people who can honestly claim that I have never had a broken bone. Of course there is no guarantee that I will maintain this level, but at 66 years old it is probably scarce. In fact, considering how careless I was as a child it is probably a miracle.

Exercise is still the #1 way I think--at least from what I understand--strong muscles protect the bones more is my understanding--does that comport with you understanding?
Best--

My husband drinks a lot of green tea and I rarely indulge. It does not seem to have much taste to me but if it good for the bones perhaps I should join him at least once a day.

I bought some decaf green tea Kcups for my Keurig and enjoy a nice cup of hot, green tea in the afternoons. Now I'm thinking I should add another cup or two to my day

Walking 6000 steps a day also decreases your chance of developing osteoporosis. I think that would help, too.
