Do you know anything about the Limberlost?

I am trying to get rid of some of our many books. My goal is to choose five for each month to read. Once I've read them I will decide whether to dispose of them or not. At the moment, they are all books I've read previously although perhaps many years ago. One I've just finished is called The Song of the Cardinal and is by Gene Stratton Porter. I also have A Girl of the Limberlost by the same author which my mother gave to me as compensation for having to have my tonsils out when I was about 10. I wasn't impressed at the time! Gene Stratton Porter lived from 1863 to 1924 and was a strong supporter for the conservation of the wetlands of Indiana. She wrote novels as well as columns for national magazines and some of her works were translated into other languages, including Braille. She was also one of the first women to open a movie studio after being dissatisfied with the interpretation of her novels by other studios. As a wildlife photographer, she specialised in the birds and moths of the Limberlost Swamp. I am wondering if any MyLot Americans know of her works? I'm sure I've seen mention of the limberlost from time to time. As Stratton-Porter loved owls, I've added a photo of an owl seen in our area.

I've never read it or heard of this book. I am going to see if they have it for my Nook.

@JudyEv I found it for my Nook but it isn't free so I will have to wait until I get paid from Mylot. I have it saved as a favorite so I can remember.

@simone10 I wouldn't pay for the one about the cardinal unless you've been able to read an excerpt and think you'd like it. I haven't reread the other one but I do know it was more enjoyable.

It's quite interesting. I'm looking forward to reading it again as I know a bit more about the area than I once did - meaning I know what of America it is set.

@JudyEv About ten years ago my Dad had a big barrister's bookshelf custom made for us with some oak that he had cured. In the bookshelf was a trilogy set of books, that I read each year at Christmas. It takes me back in time and a really well written story can never grow old can it?

Oh goodness, that takes me back - my grandmother had that book, and I read it at her house when I was quite small.

@JudyEv I can see the book in my mind's eye, but I can't remember the story. It was a small black book with gold lettering.

@JudyEv really does sound fascinating, I might have to look in the library. Right now I'm reading The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom... Fascinating fiction

I guess I read a lot of old books really. It gives you a sense of how people lived years ago - depending what books you read of course. I have some written by Australians who lived on stations in the outback and they make fascinating reading.

I've never heard of her or the Limberlost before but I enjoyed reading about her in your story. Funny in my younger days, my best girlfriend and I stayed for about 4 days at a lodge in Central Ontario called Limberlost. It was on a gorgeous lake, surrounded my tall pines and was beautiful!

Are you going to put the unwanted old books at the library? Over here, some libraries allow you to put the books there for others to take. It is sort of a book exchange, but there is no requirement to exchange. You can just take and go.

That sounds like a good scheme. I will give the library any books in good condition. Others I will put in a charity store.

I haven't heard of this author. I'm sure after reading the books and if they need to be disposed you can donate them to the library

They might go to a charity shop as they are a bit too old and yellowed for a library.

Beautiful photo. I have not heard of Limberlost before. I also never heard of the author, but I like her attitude of opening up a movie studio. I wonder if she wrote any books that made it through hr movie studio after she opened it?

I've tried to find out but couldn't find out what films were made there. It doesn't seem that any of her own books were made into films there.

Her works would have very limited appeal now I think but it gave good information about how the people in that area lived at the time.

There are so many authors aren't there? And her books wouldn't be popular now although The Girl of the Limberlost was apparently made into a film 4 times.

Never heard of Portner but looked her up. A true legacy who spent a substantial amount of time during the post modern era capturing the essence of the Limberlost swamp via her works. Inspirational. I haven't had the chance to pick up one of her books but am intrigued by her works now. Striking owl photo by the way, love it!

We were pleased to get such a nice photo of 'our' owl. We've seen him a few times when we've come home after dark.
