Pit Bull Hero

For some reason, every one has a fear of the Pit Bull. Trust me, it's not the animal but the owner who is at fault. There are more dog bites in the USA from Yorkshire Terriers, Dachshunds and other small breeds than there ever will be from Pit Bulls, Dobermans or Rottweilers. That's because the small breeds never 'make headlines'. Can't you picture it? "200-Pound Man Attacked by 12-Pound Dachshund". Dakota is an American Pit Bull Terrier and her handler Kris Crawford have saved more lives than you can count. Dakota is a special dog in that she is an "air-scent" dog and is used for Search and Rescue. She was even used in trying to find the bodies of the astronauts in the 2003 Space Shuttle Disaster. I had a 6-week old Pit Bull dumped at my mailbox. Probably because she was the runt of the litter from some dog-fighting ring. I named her Zeus and she was the sweetest, most loving dog. Extremely intelligent and I voice and hand-command trained her. When we had people coming to look at adoption of dogs at the shelter I had on my property, she would tell me instantly who was bad or good. If she indicated that someone was 'bad', I would start asking questions of that person before even taking them to where the other dogs were. Inevitably at the end of the interview, I could tell that this person was not going to be adopting a dog by the answers they had given. Zeus was spot on and as I say, "The nose knows." There are a lot of Pit Bull Heroes out there, so the next time you see one, don't automatically assume that it's viscous and will attack at any moment. Remain calm because the body scent you put out, the animal will pick up on. If the dog smells fear coming from you (and this can be any breed), you may seal your fate.

Small dogs are the ones who will bite you over the other sizes.

And there are a lot of reasons why @jstory07 . Especially kids because they don't know how to handle a dog and if they're too rough, it hurts the dog and their natural reaction is to bite.

Pit bulls can be very loving dogs and every so many years it is a different breed of dog that they say is vicious, when I had a Doberman people were afraid to come near her as they thought she would bite them. How silly is that.

@nanette64 Usually when a dog bites someone it is because a person has hit them or threatened them in some way.

Oh geez, it figures @Marcyaz . People's perception of these dogs is ridiculous. Sure there have been some bad incidences, but maybe there was a darn good reason for the dog attack.

I've never owned a pit but the ones I've been in contact with have always been very friendly. I agree it is the owner who makes the dogs bad.

Don't forget that it is also the basic character of the dog, just like people dogs can have bad temperaments even Golden Retrievers. My boy Mykey was a street mutt runnin loose with his litter mates when he was maybe 6 or 7 weeks old, I managed to catch him and for 12 years he'd do his best to kill any other kritter around his domain and hated all men and most women, I honestly don't think I was to blame for his demeanor, he was sweet with me and my family. Oh, he was the best watch dog I've ever had.

Yeah, he was devoted to me @nanette64 and he was also devoted to Sophie the older dog I had when I caught him. He loved his family but boy was he a ruthless hunter.

@rebelann When you take into consideration their scent glands, I imagine everything would be alluring to him.

As you say, there aren't many bad dogs, but there are a lot of bad owners.

I think that's why I go bonkers on some people @jaboUK . You wouldn't believe some of the idiots that came to the shelter.

@nanette64 It's amazing that Zeus could sniff the bad ones out. (Funny name for a female dog)

@jaboUK She was something else, that's for sure. She actually chose her name. I would stand at the front door and call out different names and it wasn't until I yelled Zeus that her head snapped around; she stood up and looked right at me.

These dogs were bred for dog fights, bear and other animal baiting since the early Roman and medieval periods in history (sorry but that's truth) , they were not bred for war or as guard dogs so their instinct would be more on fighting other dogs or other animals. I once owned a female Staffordshire bull terrier named Chokey and it was one of the kindest dogs i ever had even to my children, we even taught it to ride a tricycle but people would be so intimidated by her looks. I agree with you, the owner or the handler makes the dog.

this is a tough one.the word itself scares people.I have not come across any.But hear all the horrible things that they do.Even on the news cast.It all depend on the owner or how they are treated from outside. Thank you for posting this and to let the people know the Pit Bull is a good animal. Like any other breed .You have some good one and bad ones.

They've been given such a bad rap @amadeo ; mostly due to dog fighting rings. And it only makes headline news when the animal attacks instead of headline news that a Pit Bull saved someone's life.

@Nanette64 I agree with you .. It is all in how the dog is trained by his owner..

Have you ever seen the show Pit Bulls and Parolees @hostessman . Their original location was in California but after a law was passed that ALL Pit Bulls, Dobermans and Rottweilers were to be killed, they moved to New Orleans. It's a great show.

@nanette64 I'm glad in this case it was not the dog, but sometimes it is the dog.
