So... I sold another book...

And I'm not thrilled about it. Because I know again I will end out losing money instead of making money. Amazon only charges the customer $6.49 for shipping. This 2 inch soft cover book is going to cost at least 12 bucks to send to New Brunswick, Canada (from Ontario). I am LOSING money on these sales. There is no sense in this. I am so sorry I listed my books on there.

Can you take your books off that site and sell them somewhere else?

I might just do that. My daughter promised she'd help with a garage sale this summer so... we'll see.

@infatuatedbby Only if I can get help. And my daughter said she would. We shall see.

@patgalca A garage sale would be a good idea.

This is the reason why I do not list books there. If I sell books outside Switzerland it would cost twice the price I get for the books.

Oh Ouch! I sell books on Amazon and have lost money a couple of times--always on the shipping--now I am really careful about it

Yes, when I complained to Amazon they told me to raise my prices to make up for it. They're idiots.

@patgalca ouch! I don't do any shipping other than to the US and now only standard shipping--I lost my shirt on rush orders

@divalounger Haven't shipped outside my country, and all standard mail.

Am I understanding you sell your books on Amazon but ship them yourself? Are these books you wrote and self-published? I sell my books on Amazon (I published the paperback versions via CreateSpace). The books are printed on demand when ordered and Amazon ships them for me. I just sit back and wait for the royalties to hit my bank account when one sells.

No, I am selling used books that are cluttering up my house. They are in mint condition but I guess I need to make the prices higher. But even at these low prices they are taking forever to sell.

@DWDavis That's my next move, but I'm thinking of doing it in collections - like 5 books by the same author type of package.

@patgalca Did you have any luck selling them on e-bay? I have a friend who regularly searches e-bay for used book deals.

Does Amazon have an outlet in Canada? Or do you send the books from your house or something? I'd think they would work with you on the shipping, but we've not had to deal with this as yet as my husband's book isn't yet published.

These are used books that I am selling, not books I published. I have on idea how the published (self-published) process works for selling on Amazon. I complained to them about their flat shipping rate and they told me only small businesses could set the shipping prices and I should raise the price of my books to cover the difference.

@MarshaMusselman It's amazon.ca so only Canadian customers attend that site.

@patgalca Well, at least that would be one answer. Could you stipulate that the price of the book is one thing if shipped in the US and another if shipped in Canada or elsewhere? Not sure the best way to go about fixing it, but they've offered a different way at least.

That's a shame. Have you more books to sell there and can you cancel them?

I might. I'm going to wait until I get paid for this one before I remove them. Afraid it could mess with my outstanding payment.

I don't know what the shipping prices are in Canada but in the United States they offer a media rate for things like books, DVD's and printed material. Its nice to make a sale but not when it ends up costing you money

The clerk at the postal outlet said they have a small business discount but I'm not a small business so don't qualify. I'd probably have to pay for the card anyway.

I think I'm pricing the books too low. I figured I wouldn't be able to sell them for more. Of course if I sell them in a garage sale I will get even less per book (even though they are in mint condition) but I won't have to pay anything.

Better to remove it there and try to sell it in other selling site which has a low charges for shipping.

The problem is the low charges on shipping. Amazon charges the customer a flat rate of $6.49 but it costs me $12.00 to ship. I complained and they said to go in and raise the prices of my books so that I wouldn't lose money. I did that last time.

I was thinking of using ebay but in selling a group of books all by the same author so it would be like a collection. Figured I might make more money that way. I don't know though.

If you have Craigslist in Canada you should try selling on there then you won't have any shipping charges.

I am sorry to hear that. This is not good that the sellers can't earn from selling stuffs from Amazon. As Amazon will lose more sellers and it is not good for itself. They shall consider to change some rules. Everybody's earning is a long term business.

That's disappointing. Can you change your prices to make up for the cost of the shipping? You shouldn't have to lose money on the deal.

Yes, they advised me to do so and I did but I think I should up them further. They're all in mint condition so there is no reason why I shouldn't be able to get more money for them.

@patgalca If someone really wants one of your books, they'll be willing to pay. Otherwise you're doing a lot of work just to provide a service. I realize you want to get rid of your books, but don't spend a lot of time trying to give them away. You could donate them to a library sale or have your own yard sale. You'd maybe get rid of them sooner if they're in your way. If you'd rather sell them for what they're worth, you'll have to be willing to increase the price and wait for someone to order them. I hope you're able to make a few dollars on them. I also have a pile of books that I don't know what to do with. I have a hard time letting them go.

Are you tied into a contract with Amazon? Ever thought of online publishing in instalments? So to get to the end of a good book , you have to pay per chapter. Just a thought
