Joe Cat Crossed The Rainbow Bridge Today

We knew Joe Cat's days were drawing to a close. Over the last several weeks we've sadly watch him losing weight and muscle. But he was still eating and still using the litter box, and he still sought out my company. He and Ace had even reached a truce and some evenings both would join me in my chair. When Joe's abdomen began to distend, we took him back to the vet to see what was going on. The vet told us there were many things it might be but without putting Joe through all kinds of tests he couldn't tell us what. Then the vet dropped the bomb. He said no matter what we found out it was, there wasn't really anything that could be done to stop or turn around what was going on. After a heartfelt discussion with the vet, whom we've known for over 20 years, it was decided the best thing we could do for Joe Cat was to give him lots of love, attention, and keep him comfortable and happy for however long he had left. We promised that when the time came that Joe appeared to start suffering we would bring him back in to do what was best for Joe. Today, Joe relieved us of having to make that painful decision. When I said good-bye to him this morning and he gave me back his usual happy meow, I had no idea it was the last time I would get to hear that meow. Sometime during the day today, Joe found a dark quiet spot in his room, under our son's bed, laid down, went to sleep, and crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He is now with the furry family members who preceded him across the Rainbow Bridge so I know he is not lonely. But I will be lonely for him. It is not easy to accept that my little gray writing buddy of 15 years is gone. You were a good cat, Joe. I will always be glad you crawled into my lap that day when we went to pick up Tiger Cat for Z.

I am sitting here tearing up, I am so sad for you and I know that my day is coming. Our dog Beau turned 14 on Valentine's Day and that is pretty old for a dog. It is so sad that our pets have such short lives but they do bring us so much joy in that time.

It is hard saying good-bye and I always promise myself I won't adopt any more four legged companions when I lose one, but time passes and another finds his or her way into my heart.

@nanette64 I'm sure he did. My condolences on your loss. Now they are probably chasing each other through the endless fields of catnip.

I think Joe knew how hard it would be for me if he'd have to be taken to the vet so when it was his time he found a place to go to sleep and left quietly.

@LadyDuck I am trying to spend as much time with Tiger as I can. We usually get some time when I first get home from work while the dogs are outside and again in the evening after they've gone upstairs with my wife.

I'm sorry you've lost Joe Cat. We had a little grey cat too who we loved. Sadly we had her put to sleep at 16.

I share the sadness I know you still feel. It is a wonder that, after the heartbreak of losing a beloved companion we can ever bring ourselves to love another one, but we do.

At least you enjoyed a 15 year run with Joe. I have been through a similar situation. Our beloved cat got cancer and just quietly faded away.

Once he started going downhill, he went pretty fast. It was hard to watch and I tried to give him as much attention as he would let me.

@DWDavis Sorry to read about JoeCat. That cat kind of reminded me of the dog I used to have who we had to take to the vet for she had cancer. I enjoyed the stories that you shared.

Sad to hear this. I know your feelings as we all pet lovers have to go through with this. They always do this. They choose a place to breathe their last.

That was a good way for him to go, however I understand your sadness. 15 years is a long time to have a pet. You made me feel really teary with your loving tribute to Joe.

OH dear how very sad. I am so sorry for the loss of your pet. It is surprising how we become so attached to our pets. I love your description of the rainbow bridge.

I am so sorry for your loss. When I lost my kitty I cried my eyes out. Cats life really long, even longer than most dogs. Your kitty really did cross the rainbow bridge and you will see him on the other side. After my last dog passed away there were signs here and there that assured me he was in heaven.
