Slot Machines Need More Playbacks

United States

I took my mom, who is 87 to the casino yesterday. She loves to play and has always been a moderate player. I like to play and like her, I always stick to what I brought. Sometimes I can go through it pretty fast though. Most of the machines at our casino have almost all been upgrade to two cent machines and the minimum bet is 30-40, which translates up to $.80 a spin. But the paybacks are very minimal. You need paybacks to keep going. Why are they not generous with the paybacks? Everybody puts the paybacks back into the machine. It's the dribbles that keep you there playing! I like to cash out when I get a jackpot and save that. Do you save your jackpots or do you look at them as fun money and play them too? I think the lack of playbacks is the number one complaint of those who play slot machines. Is that a legitimate complaint or not?

Most people would agree with that. They are intended to show a profit and therefore the amount paid out is less than goes in, but the percentage of profit is often quite unrealistic. Many people play those machines purely for a little amusement, so paying out more reasonable would increase the attraction and indirectly boost the overall profits.

That's exactly what I think. They make a huge profit. It wouldn't hurt them to shell out a little more to the player.

@Jeanniemaries It would simply give the player a better run of entertainment for their money, which would usually end up back in the machine anyway.

@Asylum Yes, the longer they keep a person in theory, the more money they will spend.

My husband has worked at a casino resort for twenty years this June. We play maybe once year if that. They payouts really are poor.

People who work in casinos generally know better than to play in casinos.

Do you think if the payback money was better more people would play? It is a big turnoff when they don't let you have any fun at all.

@TheHorse They see it all day in and day out. I have seen some seriously unhappy people at a machine, pouring hundreds into it hoping to recoup what they lost. Very sad.

I go occasionally to a casino and I do like the slots also. When I win a certain amount I will cash out and not play any more. I have noticed more and more the machines are now as you say the minimum bet is higher which makes it more expensive to play.

I realize that in order to win big you must play big and many people won't play anything less than a dollar machine. But I play for fun, I go for entertainment. I know I'm not going to win big. It's possible but not probable. I love the bonus games and they are also chintzy with those too. They don't even have to pay off any more than a dribble to still be fun. It's annoying to play and play and play and never get a bonus game.

I only went to the Casinos when I visited Las Vegas, the amusement is in playing, so I agree that they should give more paybacks.

I totally agree, although I do save out the bigger jackpots to keep. I can't help myself!

I like to play the slots too sometimes, but I always keep in mind that they are there to take our money! However it's very annoying to put your money in and get nothing back. As you say, the paybacks are what keep you there, and even if I lose in the end I do expect a bit of entertainment on the way.

For me it doesn't have to be big amounts, I'm happy to get anything back. I'm there to have fun, not get upset and annoyed when a machine swallows a big chunk of cash and nothing comes back.

I rarely go to the casino but don't mind spending a set amount on the pokies. I don't really understand how it all works so won't comment further. :)

I think we are all in the same boat, it's maybe a casino secret?

As soon as I hit anything above what I brought I quit and go home. I am a terrible gambler.

@Jeanniemaries lol Yup. I allow myself $20 to invest in gambling and then we go enjoy the buffet. I went into Vegas and left with money. I hit $100 at New York New York and walked away and played for the rest of our stay and still left with money. I am just plain cheap and yes thrift shopping is a much bigger win!! lol

Yep! A terrible gambler but wise! They won't like you! I always bring a certain amount I plan to spend as entertainment money. I don't go often either. I always plan a trip when I visit a friend who is a huge player and she always gets a free hotel and meals for us. That is once a year and I hit our local one an hour away a couple of times a year. It's fun to play but not my favorite thing to do. I much prefer thrift shopping. Now there is a place to find a jackpot deal!

@BelleStarr Good for you! That's quite a return on your $20. You probably still had some of that $20 left too!

I do think that if the winnings were more often, they would attract more people.

That's what I think, also people would stay longer to play.
