About a week ago, my walking friends and I were having coffee at the Starbucks across the Pacific Coast Highway from the beach. I was facing the ocean and my friends were facing me. Suddenly, I saw a whale spout and roll over in the water. I pointed it out and my friends and I stood up to get a closer look. So did several other patrons of Starbucks ... but I was the only one who saw the whale. It disappeared before everyone else looked out towards the ocean. A few minutes later, it happened again. Again, I was the only one to see it. A few minutes later, it happened again ... but this time, my friends and several other customers also saw the whale. One man said to me, "so you really did see it! You're not crazy!" (Gee, thanks.) I'm afraid that this spectacular whale sculpture in Laguna Beach is the only whale many tourists will ever see ... they are quite elusive!

I have never understood why, when people do not see what we can see, they think that we are crazy. I remember I saw whales when I visited California.

@LadyDuck - Being here 6 months made it much more likely that you would see a whale. I'm glad you spent enough time at the beach to see one!

I'm glad that the whale kept surfacing, or everyone would have thought I was crazy!

@Hatley - I agree that I was very lucky to see three whales ... especially from shore! I love that whale sculpture. I'm glad you got to see it.

@Hatley - I agree. I think that Laguna Beach is a lot more friendly than Newport Beach. I often see famous people at the Starbucks in Newport Beach, but people are more casual in Laguna Beach. I always say Laguna has to have one of the few Starbucks in the world where millionaires stand in line next to homeless people and everyone is comfortable! LOL

Lovely sculpture. I have been to Laguna Beach once - didn't see this nice sculpture. Hopefully one day when I'm in the area I'll see the whale too!

@infatuatedbby I'm glad you know where Heisler Park is in Laguna Beach. Take a stroll along the path above the cliff overlooking the ocean, and you cannot miss this stunning sculpture!

Ha ha! It is hard to get a picture of them. By the time you get your camera into the right position, they are out of sight!

This time it is easy to make out what the sculpture was doing when he made that statue.

@Hannihar - Yes, it is an easy to understand sculpture ... and most of the time it is the only whale you can see while in Laguna Beach!

@Hannihar - Yes, I think the other sculptures are intended to make people think about what they might be!

Oh ... you did not understand. I saw a real, live whale, but did not get a picture. It took other people a little while before they saw it, too. The only picture of a whale I could take was one of this sculpture ... which thousands of people have seen.

Ha Ha! I can understand why you would start to doubt yourself. The ocean is so vast, even when I see something and point it out, sometimes people are looking at the wrong place, so they miss it. I love watching whales, too.

We were watching dolphins jump when we went to Cedar Key and my husband kept missing it. It is not easy to catch a breach, I know I went on a whale watch in BC and tried so hard to get a picture.

We see them frequently and not too far of the coast in central Oregon during migration. It is a wonderful sight to see them blow.
