We went to the zoo today

Ocelot--my own work

And I brought pictures of more than just animal rump. A few even posed for me. The zoo is a small affair inside a large regional park. It features animals from southern California. The big draws are the black bear, the mountain lions, and the petting zoo full of farm animals. It also has some snakes and birds of prey—bald eagles, golden eagles and various vultures. The last of these are such ugly critters! Safely behind glass are snakes and scorpions. And as far as I’m concerned, that’s where they can stay. One of the more cooperative animals, as far as my camera was concerned, was the ocelot. I’ve never seen one the wild. I’ve seen bobcats—happily at a distance. The zoo also has another well-known southern California denizen, the coyote. He stood for me. A gentleman, I guess. But he stayed in the shadow and his pic was too dark to post, darn it. I was surprised the animals were out. We were there at midday, when most of them sleep. And while some mooned us, enough cooperated that for once, I got faces in most pics and not, well, hind ends.

It is surprisingly hard to get good photos at a zoo. Difficult to miss the netting. The ocelot is very pretty isn't he?

Yes. They appear very much like an overgrown house cat, but they've got attitude.

Yes, the only way to miss the fence is to get inside with the ocelot and there's only so much I'm willing to sacrifice for a good shot.

@msiduri I thought you did well with this shot. We can see his head and eye.

The Cheyenne Mountain zoo in Colorado Springs is literally on the side of the mountain. You have to climb up levels to see everything. Luckily, it's worth it.

Sounds wonderful. Is it for kiddies as well?

@msiduri - Yes. Provided they can walk up several levels.

@teamfreak16 Good for them. There's always a bit of squawking. Part of being a kid, I guess.

@msiduri Considering the circumstances,I would say the photo was not bad.You seem to have enjoyed the'' visit ''. What would have happened if you tried to take a close up photo of the Ocelot--without a fence in between.

@msiduri You know,I rather thought the Ocelot would have been shocked into inaction. So you could shoot and get back and then deal with your husband and the Zoo people.I see it is something impossible. So I think that shot is the best that can be done.

@silvermist I would have gotten a nice action shot of an ocelot's front paws, claws extended, coming right at me, I suppose.

Thanks, @silvermist . If I'd tried to get into the enclosure with the ocelot for a picture, I think first husband would have yelled rather loudly at me for doing something so stupid. The ocelot probably would have attacked me. Then the Park Service people would have clubbed me for upsetting the kitty. Not really.

Thank you. It was just about the best of the bunch. It's nice to use a digital camera and not waste film.

I do, too. Of course, it will five years before I get another usable picture.

I've always loved looking at the small cats in the zoo. Ocelots, margays, they're just so exquisite. Big kitties are nice too.

Nice to look at and to watch. They're so graceful. The motion is so fine-tuned. But cuddling... well, house cats. Dogs. Maybe not a finely engineered, but a whole lot less likely to rip your lungs out.

What's an ocelot? I've never heard of that animal. And i thought the picture was a turtle.

@alchemistrx *WHEW* Well, glad you see it. I'm not handy with a camera, but I didn't think I was THAT bad.

A turtle? Oh, I hope I took a better picture than that. I wrote an explanation below. The animal is standing inside a hollow log, facing to the right. It's a member of the cat family.

Do they give you a reason for that, @sjvg1976? It seems like an odd restriction. And an unfortunate one.
