Kitty care for when I'm gone

One of the hardest things to do when you have to go away for an extended period of time is finding substitutes for the responsibilities you have. I am fortunate that the school finds substitute teachers for me, though I have to write the lesson plans, of course. Finding someone to care for pets is harder. I have some fine, cat-loving friends who are organizing themselves to help care for my kitties while I am gone. I admit I was worried, but it appears that they are going to do just fine. I am so blessed to have animal-loving friends. Do you have pets? Do you care for others' animals? How do you find pet-sitters?

@petatonicsca I do not have pets. When you have pets looking after them while we are away for long is a problem. It is lucky for you that you have cat-loving friends to take care of your cats.

I don't have any pets at the moment. I had to put mine down a month ago. She went with me wherever I went, but I never did do an overnight until I was in the nursing home. My son was home with her.

@petatonicsca I miss her a lot. I never did anything harder than putting her down. She had aggressive cancer and it was time.

I can understand it is hard to arrange the pets when we have a long time travel. In the past we brought out dog to my dad's friend and he would take care of him. And our grandma would looked after our cats. I am glad that you can find some friends who will help you to take care of your kitties. At least it is better than the pet hotel because I think they just feed them on time but they will not play with them and the cats can't go around but stay in the cages all the time.

We don't really have pet hotels. Our vet has some cages where he will board animals but they are just cages. Most Japanese people only go away for three or four days if that.

I do not have pets, but I take care of the cat of my neighbor when he goes on vacation. His cat is a lovely and friendly cat.

I used to take care of other people's animals and enjoyed it because at the time I did not have pets.

I've had good, bad and horrible experiences @petatonicsca . That's why I hate having to go anywhere. When I went to visit my mother because she was very ill, I had a 'friend' that I thought I could trust watch my 14 cats, 3 dogs and 3 donkeys. I had purchased exactly the amount of food necessary for all. When I came back, the litter boxes were FULL, the dogs had no water and their containers dry as a bone, none of the dog cans or cat cans had been used and very LITTLE dog or cat crunchies had been used. I was so mad I could have killed the guy. I was gone for 7 days so you can imagine how the animals suffered; especially on not having water in the month of May.

That is really terrible! Well, the people taking care of my animals have done it before, even took one to the vet when she was sick.

It's good to find you on here. I don't have any pets, so don't have that problem. But I can understand why you want someone you trust to look after your cats.

I do ask my sister to come over to feed my dogs and water my plants when we leave for a vacation.

It's good to have your sister near enough to do it. My cousin lives near and used to do it, but she and her husband moved across town and now it is inconvenient. So my friend who drives by my house on the way to work will do it.

Luckily Herc, our sheep, has endeared himself to our neighbours and they keep an eye on him if we are away. He is very low-maintenance. :)
