Spatula then and now

In the image you see two spatulas. The bigger one belonged to my husband's grandmother. From the size it is obvious that whatever was concocted using that spatula must have been voluminous as compared to what is going on in our house today, as we are using the smaller one that you see.
I cannot imagine the strength one needed to stir that stuff using a spatula that big in size.

This spatula was used in their large kitchen. In the good old days there were large families. I was just thinking how difficult it must have been for the lady of the house to use that spatula.

Wow that really is amazing the difference. I wonder if it was used to churn huge things of butter or something. We use ones like the one on the right. I like my grandparents wooden spatulas as they are thicker and stronger then the newer ones. New ones I have bought at the store I have stirred things with and broken them in half.

They are indeed stronger than the new ones but I would never be able to stir that huge a quantity

It's interesting to see how those things have evolved over the years, isn't it? I think my mother-in-law has one very similar to the one on the left that she inherited from one of her relatives.
I love seeing the differences in things across the world, too... for example, I'd call the spatula on the right a spoon. I'll have to share a photo of one of my spatulas later on... they're a lot different than those are.

You are right and must say you are a keen observer. It is more a ladle but it can be used as a spatula.

The cooking was done on fire but imagine the quantity that they needed to cook, every single day

The bigger one is indeed a spatula but the smaller could be used for both purposes.

It's so nice that you still have the one from your husband's grandmother. I think it's really precious.
I think back in those old days, some people have to cook for more people, so they have to use the bigger pot and bigger spatulas as well. Perhaps they have bigger family?
Yes, I think they need to be really strong to stir and cook for such a big pot. I don't think I can handle that.

what a treasure to've! 'back'n the day' folks cooked fer masses - family 'n friends alike. perhaps that was the need fer such? i'm with ya though, i'd lack the strength these days to wield such a tool.
