What Would You Have Done in This Situation

It was dark and silent in the room except for those hiding behind the desk.
I was over in the corner croching down when the door opened and there stood a man with a gun.
The gunman took a step in our direction and started to fire his gun hitting us.
It only took three minutes and the shooting stopped.
Were we still alive we wondered?
Thank goodness the gunman had a toy gun with plastic pellets and it was only a mockup to show us what we should have done instead of hiding.
Should someone have called 911 yes, but the police are not always a few minutes away.
So what should have been done?
You need to take control of your own survival by escaping through a window or attack the gunman with a chair or whatever is at hand.
Any suggestions on what else you could do in this situation?

Throw things then I hope you have a good aim. I don't think many people would know what to do unless it happened to them.

@Marcyaz well even if I didn't hit maybe I'd distract? But sounds like good training to have

I can't exactly say what I would do if I was in that situation. Because I could easily say something like "Beat the crap out of the gunman." But when facing such an event for real, I'd probably go into shock.

This is something that could happen to people while at work. That's why I wrote a discussion recently about a company in Georgia that was having all employees carry fire arms.
Hard to call the police when you are trying to defend yourself.

@Marcyaz ....I think this could be a up and coming thing in some businesses. People becoming paranoid, bosses being over zealous, etc. It's a sign of the times.

I think every home should be well armed these days. My home is ready, incase someone breaks in and tries to harm us.

@Marcyaz Absolutely! One should always be prepared for the worse. Hopefully, we will never need anything like that. I feel it is better to be safe than sorry.

Whether or not diving through a window or hiding would be the better choice depends on the individual circumstances of each incident. The reaction time to decide would be extremely small and no margin left to change one's mind, so considering that it is also difficult to think in such a situation it becomes pure chance whether the choice was right or wrong.

We lock the door so we get some time if someone hostile tries to get in.
Fortunately, that never happened.
If it does happen, it depends what the criminal is doing, and what I decide to do.
Thinking about it, I will probably jump out of the window if I get time.
If not, I will prefer to attack him and get shot instead of letting him do what he wants. I will try to throw a chair on him. In such situation, thinking logically is hard, the adrenaline rushes through the veins and I can't really tell what I will do in a real case.
I hope I won't have panic and actually do something that will make it hard for the criminal.

I agree with the suggestion to attack the gunmen with anything at hand. When we have drills for this at school, I always position myself between the door and my students in a position where I can ambush anyone coming through the door and I always have my largest and strongest pair of scissors in my hand. My students are convinced that whoever comes to our school to make trouble will need to be more scared of me than they will be of him.

It is very scary and I was in a similar situation several years ago and ran and hid.

I'm glad it wasn't real, you had me worried for a minute. I don't know what I'd do, probably freeze and pray.

Sorry didn't mean to worry you. It would probably be what most people would do is to freeze.
