That Beautiful Morning

It's been two days since I've had much opportunity to write on Mylot. My last post concerned the freezing rain we had had and how beautiful everything looked with the sun shining on the icy surfaces. Yesterday my oldest daughter dropped by to pick up some books for her son (our grandson) to use for a school project. Naturally I asked how everything was. She told me ***ty. Then she proceeded to ask me, had I heard about the QEW being shut down near Stoney Creek the morning before? I reminded her, I live under a rock, and unless I'm driving don't listen to the radio. Her husband, our son-inlaw was in a serious wreck. He totalled the BMW that is his pride and joy. Airbags deployed, other vehicles involved.....at least two. The minivan he initially struck an the ambulance he bounced off of as his car spun wildly across the highway. Twice fortunate, he was badly shaken and at the moment his most serious injury was a bloodied nose caused by the airbag deploying. That beautiful morning could easily have had deadly consequences. My son inlaw will tell you, the seatbelt saved his life. Without it he would have been thrown from the car, with devastating results. I think I will ask my children to stay home the next time the roads are icy.

Ice is the most dangerous thing on a road and some people drive like crazy putting at risk all other people lives.

@Morleyhunt Two in a month is scary. My parents have been involved in a serious wreck, many years ago, there was a very thick fog, more than 200 cars were caught in that wreck on the freeway. My parents were lucky, their car was destroyed and they were not even hurt.

My son inlaw is a paramedic (ambulance driver and attendant) who spends many hours on the roads. This is the first time he has been involved in an accident as the victim. My family has been blessed. No one was ever involved in a serious wreck before this year. Now two in just over a month. A little worrisome for this mother.

Wow how lucky your son in law is after being in that wreck. Thank God and I'm happy he's alive even though his car is totaled/ I worry all the time about my family driving on icy roads

@Morleyhunt being a mom is both the best and worst job in the world. I worry about my kids all the time. Two serious accidents in such a short period of time is definitely worrisome.

What is the most worrisome, this is the second serious accident one of my children has been involved in, in just over a month.

Thankfully nobody was seriously hurt! Icy roads are treacherous. I refuse to drive on icy roads and have stayed home whenever they are questionable. Better to be safe than sorry.

Sometimes we have no choice. I have driven through some horrible weather over the years. If I can avoid it, I will but somehow it isn't always possible.

What an awful thing to happen - was this the same daughter who wrecked her own car not long ago? At least the main injuries were to the cars, not to your daughter or son-in-law.

Glad to hear all he got was a bloody nose. From the looks of the car it could have been so much more serious.

It could have been much worse. He always wears his seatbelt. As a paramedic he has seen the results of not wearing a seatbelt.

Glad to hear that your son-in-law is fine, except for the nose. Yes, it's always recommended to wear the seat belt, there are still some people do not pay attention on this.

@Morleyhunt I remember reading that. It's so thankful that they are both alright. They really need to be extra careful while driving there.

We have been fortunate twice this winter. The last week in January our second daughter rolled her SUV three times on the same highway, just 50km farther east.

It's two serious accidents within a month that I find the most disturbing.

Thank goodness he was buckled up and had no serious injuries. No car is good on the ice! We had a BMW which slid on ice and snow, and rain! It's only metal, so it can always be replaced. People can't!

That is what we have all told him. He knows this himself, but this car was his tr assure, so losing it in such a spectacular crash makes it difficult.

Freezing rain, black ice and white outs seem to cause the most accidents in our area.
