Once Upon A Mountain

I wrote this ten years ago when my oldest son and I were on a backpacking trip in the Grayson Highlands Park in Virginia. It was a very memorable weekend for both of us. Once upon a mountain in the cold dark morning before dawn I stood and gazed at the stars before the gray light chased them on Behind me in his one man tent my oldest son was waking On the last morning of a backpack trip the two of us were taking I urged him hurry from his sleep so that he would not miss The mountains waking from their slumber in the morning's mist As first the black sky turned to gray and sight to us returned It seemed as if the vale below into a lake had turned But slowly as the daylight grew we saw it was a cloud That filled the valley there below, gray, and big, and proud Then the sun's first rays appeared o'er the far side ridge And our last day, and the trip home, began upon that ledge The light spread forth in mighty splendor, the clouds below gave way The grays and blacks became the green we'd hike through that last day A tear the view brought to my eye and to that of my son We said a prayer of thanks and praise unto the Heavenly One

Excellent story of your trip in poem form, DW. It would make a good Children's Book/story, have you ever thought about trying something like that? I'm curious about your photo, whether it is one you've taken of a trip or what. It doesn't hurt to put where it came from on the line below the uploading of the photo.

The photo is from Pixabay and doesn't require attribution. I wish I had some photos of that morning, but didn't have a camera with me.

@MarshaMusselman I have all that info on file as I am a member of and contributor to Pixabay. But you're right, I should include it as the caption of the photo, shouldn't I?

@DWDavis I know that they don't require attribution, but I still like to put it in to makes sure no one in the future things I stole the image from elsewhere. I also keep the info of the originator, and url where it can be found on my computer. Well actually it's not on my computer but on a cloud program that I use.

This is a lovely poem and conveys something of what was obviously a very special hike.

It was very special, and ten years later he still talks about it.

@DWDavis Thank you for sharing that with us. It is very good. Did you write anymore that you can share with us? Do you publish them or keep them in an album or folder to pass down to your kids?
