What to do with no power?

Grand Junction, Colorado
March 9, 2016 4:42pm CST
So I just got back from lunch and clocked in and was turning the tv on in here and we lost power. So I called the boss after 10 minutes to let him know and he asked me to call the power company for an ETA, (thankfully I have a smart phone to find who power company is) no ETA at this time. I was able to find out that an accident took out a major power line and crews are working on it. So I'm sitting here in the office playing on my phone, since nothing works here, and I certainly don't feel like cleaning. So what do you do when your at work with no power? The power controls the phone here at work too? Wish they would send us home for the day.

We're retired but my first thought is usually to do the ironing - then I think duh! I might clean or read a book.

Lol, my first thought was I would sit and watch a movie, I did the same thing, duh! I thought I will watch it on my phone but with no wi-fi connection out here in the middle of nowhere it wouldn't work without out eating up my data if I could keep it connected with just data. Service is spotty here. So I ended up mylotting from my phone and going through my Facebook. It was almost 2 hours with no power.

I would like a nice long nap after a good lunch.

I think I would play on my phone too unless they told me something specific that had to be done. LOL

Yeah, nothing was said and it's just 2 of us that work here and since we had no power the boss couldn't see us on camera either, lol. So we just sat around on our phones till it came back on.

That must have been a boring but easy day of pay haha. I would not want to be the employer having to pay my workers for a day where they couldn't even work. I assume they didn't want to send anyone home though in case the power came back on and then the work could continue.

That was one reason, the other was that the boss didn't want people knowing we left and we had no power for breaking into our facility. I guess stranger things have happened. Since we haven't been broken into before, I don't know why that was of concern, but it was to him.

@shaggin, well I certainly don't see me preventing the robbery , but being open I can see that as a deterrent. I just think that since the boss had to be at work he felt all his charges should be at work also.

@beaniefanatic13 Oh okay that is a good reason to have employees stay then to watch the place to prevent a robbery. I hadn't thought of that.

I would have gone home, I had a great boss who wouldn't expect me to sit in the dark and play with my phone lol

While I think my boss is great he made us both stay until it came back on. Basically he told me that at 4:30 if you have no power then you can go home. Which would have been 30 minutes before we could leave anyway. The power came back on a couple minutes after 4.

@BelleStarr, Everything here is on a computer, couldn't shred papers since no power, nor could I vacuum. It was a long boring 2 hours of just playing on the phone.

It was a couple of hours. You just don't realize how much you depend on electricity until you don't have it.

Oh yikes, that surely would be a problem. It was out for a couple of hours. No books here, a bunch of catalogs and auto racing magazines.

When the power is out - we get to go outside. There was a time when we waited around for a hour until management allowed all of us to go home, no pay though.

I don't know! So far there was no power interruption in our workplace since 2010 when I started. If that happens I may be just do something like cleaning the area or chatting/flirting with my pretty co-workers.

At work? That would be tough, since most of the work I do there is on computer (when I'm not out in the field).

One time I worked in an office by myself and it had no windows, so when the power went out, it was pitch black...so what could I do but take a power nap, lol.

Since I had plenty of windows that didn't happen for me. It also wasn't to cold here nor to hot, so heating and air wasn't an issue thankfully. I just played on my phone waiting for the power to come back on. I had just gotten word that if the power wasn't back on in 30 minutes we could leave and it came back on about 10 minutes after that. We then had to stay until closing.

It happened once at my old job and we worked on because there was enough light through windows to deal with physical files and paperwork.

We have no physical files, everything here is automated. If anyone was here to pickup a vehicle they would have to come back tomorrow, the only thing I would be able to do is call another location and ask them to stop storage so that the customer isn't getting charged for another day. They would have to get a room for the night and come in the morning to pickup vehicle. Fingers crossed that, that doesn't happen.

We've had that happen a few times here. Every time it storms we pray for a power outage so we can go home, but that never happens. Lol! Besides, we have a power generator here... :/

It would be nice if they sent everyone home for the day. I hope power goes up soon, or they let you guys out early. :)
