How do you stay organized?

I found a very cool show on TV. It's called "neat" and it's from Canada. Apparently, it's been around for a while now, but we only just recently began getting it here in the states. A professional organizer goes into people's homes and organizes them - usually two rooms that are cluttered so much that it prevents the family from living their day to day lives well. I've learned so much from watching this show. Particularly about organizing papers. The organizer, Hellen, explained that some people are visual. These people need to have their papers where they can be seen. I'm not like that with paper, but I am like that with other things. For the visual people, she uses literature organizers on top of a desk. These have little cubbies that are labeled for different papers, so when mail comes in, the papers can be tossed into their cubbies and can easily be seen and utilized. For the rest of us who don't want to see the papers, she uses plastic organizers, usually with 12 slots for each month of the year, or they can be labeled in different ways. These can be used and then put away in a drawer so everything is organized but not seen. I'm using that system right now. I love the idea of having a full year of receipts and other papers so that when tax time comes, I just grab the whole folder and go to get my taxes done. Watching this show, especially at moving time, has been incredibly useful for me. I'm learning a lot about how I will organize things in the new place. Better to plan now! :) How do you stay organized? -Claudia-

The idea of out of sight out of mind appeals to me. My challenge at the moment is lack of space and lack of places to store things in the space I have.

I like the idea of downsizing for that very reason. When we have less space, we are forced to have less things. And then we can live more simply. Most of us really don't need all the "stuff" we have. I've learned never to watch any TV or commercials where they are selling things. They tend to make me want to buy things I don't need! lol

@CRK109 I wonder if anyone has ever considered helping someone with downsizing because from an organizing perspective it sure would help.

I am glad you got some good ideas especially at this time when you are moving. Organized to me is shoving papers in boxes that I dont see for a while. Then one day when I get the where with all, I take them all out and throw out all the unnecessary and then try to organize the rest back into the box lolz

At least you know where they are in the box! So many of us have papers all over the house! I could never find things I needed. But that's changing now. When I'm living in two rooms, things won't have a chance to go missing! lol

I found it by accident while surfing the TV channels one day. I do this every so often to see if I can find something new and different to keep me company. I really do love this show!

I think I am fairly organised but I still love watching these types of shows. There is always something you can learn from them.

It amazes me how many different ways there are to organize things, depending on how our brains work. And that can make it fun! :)
