Who Knew I Liked Apricot Jam?

Z, our youngest son, brought home 3 small jars of jam from Vienna, Austria when he came back from Spring Break. One of them is apricot jam. He had to twist my arm to get me to try it. I never thought I'd like apricot anything. Wonder of wonders, it was delicious. Most of you probably know how tasty it is. I just had some on a buttered English Muffin this morning and was amazed anew at how much I like it. The jams almost didn't make it home with Z. The security at the Vienna airport cleared it through but the folks at Heathrow were going to confiscate it because they claimed it was a liquid and liquids were not allowed in carry on bags. Eventually someone with a bit more common sense was called in and, with a shake of his head, returned the jams to my son, apologized for the delay, and I can imagine him giving his overzealous agents a good smack on the back of their heads - even if only in his mind. I keep reminding myself that these agents have a tough job, have to deal with surly and impatient people all through their shift, and are doing there best to keep all of us safe. Have you ever been stopped by airport security for carrying something you thought innocuous?

It is very hard to get nearly anything through airports now. Lucky for you son they allowed it DW. I adore apricot jam too. And apricot juice and apricots period.

He was puzzled they questioned it when security in Vienna had no problem.

@DWDavis Yes, I am sure it is different from place to place, oddly.

Never liked apricots. People carry stuff like jams all the time from traveling. It's part of being a tourist. If the jars were completely sealed how could anything be hidden inside. You can hide something practically anywhere.

This was his first foreign travel. He carefully checked to see if sealed souvenir jars were OK. It shouldn't have been a problem.

It is not easy these days to get clearance from customs no matter how right one could be. Anyway happy that the apricot jam reached where it was eagerlyawaited. Apricots and figs are my favourite and apricot jam must be tasting delicious.

@DWDavis I have niece in Australia and she brings me stuff from there whenever she visits me. I was particularly impressed by the Lint chocolates that she got for me. Although they are Swiss many are made in different countries.

I have been pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy the apricot jam. I don't know if the jam I could get locally will measure up to this Austrian made delight.

Yes, I have been stopped by airport security so many times, especially when we traveled during "hot" times. Most of the time it were my pills and eye drops that causes me problems.

I hadn't even thought about medication. They might never let through.

@LadyDuck My son mentioned the Sachetorte. He said it was one of the best things he's ever tasted. He spoke highly of the food he had while in Vienna.

@DWDavis I always bring with me the Doctor's prescriptions. About apricot jam, in Austria it's especially good, it's the one they use to prepare their famous Sachetorte and now that I have mentioned it I have a craving.

A crochet hook comes to mind but in these times I didn't really mind it being confiscated. I could see the problem although it hadn't occurred to me when I popped it in my bag.

It's foolish how they confiscate obvious things but ignore some seemingly harmless ordinary things that could be dangerous in the right (wrong) hands.

@DWDavis I had to hand in about three pairs of nail scissors before I eventually started remembering to put them in my 'big' luggage.

Not in an airport, but when a friend and I drove off the ferry in Dover, England, they searched both us and the car for about half an hour. Luckily, we had nothing illegal. Not that we would have in the first place.

No I have never been stopped by airport security for anything as I no longer will go on an airplane. Glad your son was finally allowed to bring the jam home with him.

I don't like apricots, but you have me curious now!! I just might have to give that a try... and we have had our fair share of surly border people... it seems that it all comes down to the mood that they are in!!

Airport security has stopped me over the years for all sorts of things. Nothing that ever amounted to anything. But they were doing their job and I didn't get upset. As for the apricot jam, I bet it was wonderful! Good for you for agreeing to try it! :)
