It's Not My UFO!

Last week I posted a photo of the quilt I was currently trying to assemble. This morning, I pin basted the layers of the quilt, and my loving husband helped me get it mounted on my large floor frame. I had not really wanted to quilt it with a hoop, so having my husbands encouragement meant a great deal. The quilt is a UFO, just not a project that I left unfinished. My mother passed away in November, and I found six embroidered quilt square in with her mending. I decided at that moment that I would complete this quilt and give it to my nephew and his bride. Their wedding was just one week before my mother's death. Puzzling on how to turn these squares onto a full sized quilt took some time. Each step was completed with mixed feelings, but now that the top is complete I am quite happy with the result. Can I finish the quilting before Mother's Day in May? That is the goal I am setting for myself.

It's so beautiful. God bless you for making the effort in finishing it. Same thing happened with my mother in law. She was making a wedding ring quilt for us for our wedding in August. But she became ill and passed away in February. Her best friend stepped in and finished the quilt for us and my husband's family presented it to us the night before the wedding. We just cried and cried. And now that my husband is also gone, I wrap myself up in that quilt and think of her and the love she poured out to us and I send my love right back to her in heaven. xoxo

I wish someone had made me a quilt. But my mother in law made me some blankets that look nice out of yarn.

When I found those blocks I knew I had to make them into a quilt. I inherited her fabric stash so went through it find coordinating fabrics, but only the blue worked with my tastes. (She wasn't always great at matching colours.) I had most of the other colours in my own stash and had to purchase the Kelly green and the backing. There will be small projects completed, but this quilt will be my main focus for the next few weeks.

As long as we don't have any major health crisis (with my father) I should be able to do it.

That is my hope. Waking up this morning to find that my father had another nosebleed in the night will keep me away from the quilt this morning. I have a lot of laundry.

Does that mean less time in myLot and more time with the UFO?

You must be feeling so proud you were able to continue and finish that six embroidered quilt square your deceased mother left . A very nice reminder of her everytime you see it .

It is progressing. I set myself a six week target, and for the moment things are where they need to be for completion. I'm hoping to get a little ahead in the next couple of days.

That is my goal. We have made some good progress in the last week. My fingers are wanting a bit of a break today, so I may Mylot more and quilt less.

That makes me curious what the sections were comprised of. While i've made two quilts in my lifetime, I never did the stitching for either of them. My second one was a log cabin design, but I never finished even the top layer mostly because I was moving around too much. I've no idea whether it got lost in a move or whether I donated it to a friend or something. The first one was too thick to need a backing. It could have been stitched better as it fell apart in the wash at one point. I did keep that with me for many of those years when I was traveling. I don't have a picture, but maybe one day I'd get some material and make a section to show what it was like.

@Morleyhunt My first quilt was unlike any other that I've ever seen. Each square was thick and didn't need batting or backing because of that. You started with a square nine inches, and put a small square inside of contrasting colors. I think that one was about four inches square. Then you folded the corners of the larger square down to the smaller one, completely obliterating it. But, then a section of each part of the larger square-which is now smaller, was pulled back in a half circle to make it look like flowers. The flower section showed the smaller piece underneath. I originally sewed each flower section back in that area only. Later on, I realized it needed more tacking. So I stitched the two squares together, but not in enough places. I should have done each corner and then it would have stayed together fine. It got so raggedy, and I was busy with other things that I let it go.

Over time I have learned to watch the quality of the fabrics and thread that I use. It makes a difference I. The outcome and the longevity of the finished quilt.

I've set myself a goal. That usually means I will attain it. (I try not to set unreasonable goals.). Unless my father has a major crisis, that could change everything.

Thank you. I have managed to get a few quilting stitches into it yesterday. Today promises to be a crazy day, so there won't be much progress, but after that things should even out a little.
